Sydney Trains S Set - Scrapping has recommenced :(

  SydneyCider Chief Train Controller

Interesting updates. Thanks.

I've heard that there are now apparently only 2 Comeng Mk 4 Power cars left in service (C3741 - C3765 range) and that T4983 is (apparently) the very last Comeng Mk 2 Non Driving Trailer left in service (T4963 - T4987) and I assume that means the rest have gone for scrap. No idea which set it is on.

Next to be withdrawn could be:

How many are they looking at keeping as network reserves? About 6 sets? And what will happen to those once Oscars get cascaded to suburban use and they aren't needed? I doubt they'll preserve a couple sets worth of cars, based on the list so far it looks like

Mk 1 C3805 - C3857
- C3805
- C3814

Mk 2 C3858 - C3911
- C3861?

Mk 3 (C3912 - C3986)
- C3912
- C3986

Mk 4 (C3741 - C3765)
- C3765

Goninan C3001 - C3080
- C3001

Goninan Trailer T4101 - T4170
- T4101 (probably)
- T4150

Comeng Driving Trailer
- D4002 or D4003

Comeng Non Driving Trailer Mk 1 (T4921 - T4962)
- T4922?

Comeng Non Driving Trailer Mk 2 (T4963 - T4987)
- T4968 or T4983

I think from the remaining 12 sets, the most significant carriages will be taken out to form either:

Two 4-Car S-Sets (One with Goninan cars and the other with Comeng)
Possible consists: S4- C3805-T4002/T4003-T4922-C3765 and S5- C3001-T4101-T4150-C30XX

Or

Two 4-Car S-Sets and one 2-Car L-Set

Possible consists: L4- C3916-T4002 S5- C3805-T4922-T4013-C3765 S6- C3091-T4101-T4150-C30XX

These would be for tours and join sets F1, U2 and W3

From the rest of the carriages, other significant carriages will be put in museums and bought by private heritage groups.

Then finally they would be sold to the public for their own purposes such as housing and storage.

I wish SETS/DSRM/Powerhouse Museum will acquire some of the S-set Carriages.

You wrote the 25th on the 23rd..  Also

On 21/3 I rode in C3888 as part of S53 on a down Bankstown line night service. S61 was the other set in the consist.
I know it was S53 because given what I read in this thread about April being the last hurrah I made to pay attention to numbers and I took picture when I got off. So I did not misread the set number.

If I was to assume your info was absolutely correct then it seems I may have rode in its last run or one of last runs, all by fluke. The funny thing is that morning after I read the info in here I was wondering when/how id get  a S set and one just turned up for my trip that night without any effort on my part..

Actually 6 4-car sets are to be mothballed in the warehouse. All the ones with the significant carriages will stay but the rest will disappear.

S100S28
That makes sense. There are 6 more b sets to enter service and for every B Set, 2 4-Car S Sets will be withdrawn reducing the total number to 6 4-Car Sets. I don’t think 3 8-Car Sets would be able to do much if an event similar to the temporary withdrawals of all M Sets in the early 2000s or temporary withdrawal of the Ks and Cs in 2017 happen again. I think 12 would be great but I guess they would just cause issues with storage. When the 6 are retained I’m pretty sure they would just stick around at FMC instead of keeping them in warehouses or yards.

The retained would be:
S2, S56, S64, S67, and S104 + another set possibly S28

I think they may do a bit more shuffling, especially with the trailer cars before the rest are withdrawn.
  C3765 Train Controller

It turns out there are still 19 4-Car S Sets in service as S53 was not withdrawn on Sunday. It was running run 28 with S61 yesterday. Don’t know if it has been withdrawn since, however it is unlikely and probably won’t be withdrawn until the end of the week.

I know this message is probably a dumb question, but will they (Sydney Trains) tell when the last S-set will run on each line (as in, the day the last S-set on the Carlingford line runs, etc)?

Run 20 is a K Set Roster from tomorrow

So now there are only 7 S Set rosters.

Runs: L1(4S/8S), L2(4S/8S), 14(8S), 17(8S), 18(8S), 23(4S) and 24(4S).

S53 may have been withdrawn this weekend but not 100% sure. If someone can confirm that would be great.

S69 and S67 are now split so maybe S69 could be next.

Last time I was updated on S28 is that I was told that it's at Hornsby getting it's General Inspection done but it has separated from S100. Not sure if it's confirmed whether S100 has retired or not. Haven't seen it run around for a couple of weeks.

That’s interesting! I have seen a couple of S Sets and K Sets running empty from Hornsby at night. There was an instance when a K Set and S Set was coupled together last year. I don’t if you have seen it but there is a video on YouTube of it. There was another time when there was a transfer of 12 Cars/3 Sets which was quite unusual. They usually return via the north shore instead of the northern line. I don’t know why.

Also is there any chance that S100 is getting an inspection too? Maybe at Flemington. That may be the reason why it hasn’t run in a while.

Because what I've seen on this page about S28 getting a significant trailer car which means it would probably last abit longer after the GI, I may be wrong. But S100 isn't going to be one of the 6 4-car sets remaining for emergencies and with the whole fleet of B sets completed in 5 weeks time, there would be no point of S100 getting back into service or running that many S sets unless during those 5 weeks more AC trains break down which is very unlikely to happen. There are still S sets out there without significant carriages still running on the network that can be used. Last Friday I saw S113+S103, S140+S145, S69 and S65 running past Central. S97+S135 was also running last week through the city as well.

Also haven’t seen S64 and S123 in a while. S100 has T4013 although the carriage could easily be transferred to another set.

Last week I saw:

S53+S61
S56+S65
S97+S135
S103+S113
S140+S145
S99
S69

Haven’t seen:
