I've read that it carried 100,000 people on its first week of operation. Now that the bus network around Gungahlin has been reconfigured to feed into the new tram service (with no rapid buses to the city), it's probably much more crowded now. That being said, I was in Canberra two weeks before the service opened and I've been impressed with how quickly they built the line - as compared to Sydney.

Canberra Transport is also having a 'one month free' while they bed in the new routes - any patronage figures for the next (3 now ?) weeks have to be taken with the proviso that it was all free travel. The real test comes when people have to start paying again. Will they pay to ride the revised route with interchange or switch (back ?) to driving and paying for parking?

The trams have also managed to have a couple of in-service failures that bought the line to a standstill at inconvenient times.

It will be more interesting to know what the figures are like 3 months in once everyone is used to the new configuration of public transport. Is the total greater than before and by how much?

People are becoming very vocal about the removed buses (especially the express routes), greatly increased journey times and the inconvenient transfers now required since the tram's introduction. And this is happening all over the ACT, not just along the tram route.

They are trying to go to hub and spoke system, but only one 'spoke' is a tram. I can see what they are trying to do, have the buses run more services over shorter distances.
But interchange is a hard sell and has to be done well. With the schedule variability of buses, the interchange is very difficult to get right.

Of course, the people who find the new system really doesn't suit them will make the most noise. Took years for the complaints to subside about two railway stations near me ceasing to get 'express' services in the peaks, with many of the people travelling TO those stations having to change to get to work. Those people made a lot of noise for a long time in the local press.
