Ultima Container Siding and Hay Traffic

Friday 8th November at Ghaploop was a Hay train BG with G515 and X31 pulling 29 wagons. Is this because the works at Nth Geelong are finished?
Ballarat line shutdown due to works for two weeks.
Bonzel
Yes but all works at North "C" finally finished after a 9 month plus "BLUE HILLS"  saga this time under the baton of Victrack not VLP .

So the bg freights and  Metro spark placements to/from Ballarat all resumed this week with an Xtrap set on the Down Thursday .

Can we be certain the Ultima will now permanently run via Gheringhap? If so that's great news! Does this mean other trains that run via the Marsh will travel through Gheringhap too? Thanks

Some of the Heritage units and X31 in particular are getting a real workout ATM between the Ultima, the Maryvale and the Dandenong Cement traffic. Earlier this week the Maryvale had 2 x B classes on it plus a VL and then the Bs backed up for a run on the Cement either that afternoon or next morning. The X ran the SRHC Santa special to The Go on the weekend and then was straight back onto freight duty this week.

I'm hearing that the Ultima freight will continue to increase loadings in the near term.

As for Swan Hill, the issue there is that you have a very narrow time window to run freight trains due to VLine services.

That said, the loop and sidings at Kerang (which is only approx 500m long) has been recommissioned after being booked out of service.

Pardon my ignorance, but what freight would be coming form Swan Hill area? More hay?
  hbedriver Chief Train Controller

Not an awful lot of freight comes out of the Swan Hill area, apart from grain which is well served by SSR and PacNat (loading from Woorinen, Piangil, Mitiamo, and I think Nyah West). Ultima to Swan Hill is about half an hour by road, so why would you try to gain new traffic when you have a decent loading site that close? One semi-trailer alone could move 20 TEU's per shift between those places. And if you wanted to construct a new container facility at Swan Hill, there are all the issues of heavy trucks working in a residential area, lack of suitable sidings (bearing in mind most sidings are blocked in by the disused silos and caravan park), and awkward road access.

Many of those issues (including proximity to Ultima) apply also at Kerang.

Ultima really is so much easier for everyone, and as well you can run a train almost whenever you want.

Containerised loadings can easily be done at Merbein, Ultima and Donald these days, probably not much need for more in that region.

Now for the rumours; I hear that a leased S class sustained damage recently when used as a buffer stop. Anyone heard more?

Ive got to wonder, was it the prospect of SG that brought this traffic to rail or was this a market change?  I suspect the former though id be interested in other views.

James the line is currently BG.  Are you anticipating the thought of upgrading the line has been a trigger to use rail?

Yes it was supposed to have been converted already except the Victoria messed up the project....  These investment decisions were made before the decision to delay the conversion.

Rather strange thing to say bevans !

Now lets put our thinking cap on for a start.........

We're right in the midst of hay season for 1 ( it's also been an excellent year for hay ), they source the product from a very large area and remember this company built a multi million $$$ plant as well as installing a specific siding to load their produce, so why wouldn't their production be ramping up. I doubt they went into this project without doing quite a bit of forward planning.

Just to refresh ya memory nip back a couple of pages and enjoy some light reading.

The siding was laid with gauge-convertible sleepers. The link on Page 1 appears to be broken but if you fossick round on this facebook page, provided by Dangersdan707, there's a photo of such:

The last $23 million of the MBRP was diverted for urgent maintenance to bring the line up to scratch.

It's effectively a non-stop operation for one consist atm.  We might see a second consist doing the run soon.

So this service is running at an escalated frequency, the Maryvale Paper train is showing no signs of slowing, the cement train is about to be extended to run from Dandenong to North Shore and the Deni Rice train is still going, albeit at a lesser frequency (for now).

Makes me wonder, will QUBE need to start investing in more freight wagons for the Broad Gauge?
