Major Derailment on Aurizon's Goonyella System

A significant derailment occurred on Aurizon's 1021km electrified Goonyella System this afternoon at around 1.00pm. Thirty wagons are reported derailed south of Dysart on the Oaky Creek cross-country link, near the junction for the Middlemount branch. Substantial infrastructure damage has resulted, including the downing of overhead catenary, which has caused a number of grass fires. The fires are reported contained, and there have been no injuries to crew or attending rescue crews. Very early reports suggest it was an empty Aurizon service involved, but this hasn't been officially confirmed. Road access to the scene is apparently very limited, with the derailed train blocking some access points.

Additional information - it is an Aurizon service with at least one mid-train electric locomotive derailed, a 3700 or 3800.

Aurizon distributed power services on the Goonyella system using AC traction locomotives are typically 126-wagons long, with a single lead locomotive, a mid-train locomotive after the 42nd wagon and another mid-train locomotive after the 84th wagon.

Coppabella, Aurizon's big crew depot in the central part of the Goonyella System is 107km north of Dysart by road, and Jilalan (near Sarina), Aurizon's operational hub for the Goonyella System is 219km from Dysart by road. Emergency services probably came from several surrounding towns including Dysart (pop. 3,000), Clermont (pop. 3,000) and Moranbah (pop. 9,000).

3735 was the derailed locomotive in this accident, and has been left balancing at a crazy angle across a paved roadway. It will be interesting to see where this loco will be trucked to for repairs.

Any timeframe for reopening?

No official word from Aurizon. It took QR and PN five days over Christmas to clear a four wagon derailment and repair two kilometres of track on the Mt Isa line. It will be interesting to compare Aurizon's urgency with QR's.
