Tangara running sample has arrived! https://www.facebook.com/auscisionmodels/videos/822109454973916/If ever there was a model begging for close coupling, this is it.
After all this time I would be thankful that it is coming out at all and if needed close coupling can easily be done by the modeller. Better to have it slightly too far apart and able to run round 18 inch curves as on a lot of model railways than to have it close coupled and only able to run on say 48 inch curves or something.Tangara running sample has arrived! https://www.facebook.com/auscisionmodels/videos/822109454973916/If ever there was a model begging for close coupling, this is it.
Sadly, not after such a long wait. They had the chance to make an outstanding model rather than a flash paint job.
Oh well.

Roco, Marklin and Hornby have had close coupling on their coaches for years. It is part of the design and not something fitted by the modeller. The coaches run comfortably on 15 inch radius set track. And adopting this feature is not even innovation rather utilising a proven design that is freely available. After all this time I would be thankful that it is coming out at all and if needed close coupling can easily be done by the modeller. But do any of the models have a full skirt like the Tangara's have.Roco, Marklin and Hornby have had close coupling on their coaches for years. I can't speak of Roco or Hornby, but the Marklin couplers and bogies that I have seen are very well designed and I have seen them on various models with full length skirts.Roco, Marklin and Hornby have had close coupling on their coaches for years. ROCO, Marklin and Hornby are all toys and run on impossibly tight curves that no real modeller would tolerate.I can't speak of Roco or Hornby, but the Marklin couplers and bogies that I have seen are very well designed and I have seen them on various models with full length skirts.Roco, Marklin and Hornby have had close coupling on their coaches for years. It is the Americans who introduced the idea of very large radii and fixed couplers. I don't quite know why we have followed them. In general American homes have large basements unknown in this country that provide large areas for layouts. We should look more closely at European models, many of which have features better suited for our purposes.

I have Liliput HO passenger car models dating back more than 20 years that have close coupling mechanisms using a curved track in the floor of the car that allow the cars to move apart on curves but move back together on straight track. Most of these were made in the same Chinese factories used by Auscision and others.Peter, other aspect to consider is that American modellers especially those modelling the larger rail systems and long wheel bases basically have to use large radius curves for them to operate around. I know my QJ resists anything under 24" radius curves also DJH 57cl has had issues with the 28" radius curves I have now gone to minimum of 32" and hopefully no issues there.
These would be ideal for Tangara models which do not need to couple to anything else.

East coast of USA may have basements, West coast more like us - large sheds/rooms.
IMO, nothing looks more like a toy with coaches that are 9"/ 230mm long going around 18" / 450mm radius curves.
One of the features of the variable couplers is that the coaches stay as close as possible on the curves. I would agree that cars with long fixed couplers look toy-like, both on curves and off, but the variable couplers greatly reduce the effect of sharp curves and look quite realistic through points and crossings.
The effect isn't nearly as bad as the shortened passenger cars used on many USA layouts to allow close coupling on the unavoidable sharp curves. Questions about minimum radii abound on the Model Railroader forum.
Of course, you cars with variable couplers run just as well on large radii and look better in many cases.
Peter
I agree 100% with all the above comments. If you want to know the practical minimum radius for your models check out the AMRA standard on the subject @ https://amra.asn.au/standards/
The Tangara is one model that was crying out for a specialized close coupling system. There is no gap in the middle of the tangara connector in the real world and it will be a difficult correction for the modeller to do.
