Castlemaine to Maryborough line dismantling

I hear on the grape vine that the line from Castlemaine to Maryborough is to be lifted starting Monday (14-4-14). If this is true, it looks like they want to make sure no one can put up the proposal for a pass across there again.

Is VicTrack ( or whatever it's called this week ) in a competition to see which organisation is the most shortsighted?  They'd be well ahead already, one would think, after singling a good deal of the Bendigo line.

According to the Rail Revival Alliances facebook page, a post by a Duncan Ramsey says that the crossings are going to be ripped up starting Monday (I presume he means next Monday 14/04/14 as the post was made 17 hours ago).

How is resurfacing crossings a crime?

Even if they removed the whole line, the current infrastructure would need to be replaced for a passenger service anyway.

Exactly. Removing rails from level crossings is a great idea. People won't have to negotiate an unnecessary speed bump over a line that hasn't been used for a decade.

IF "they" ever decide they want to use the line again, is any of the track even usable today? Or would they have to replace it all anyway?

As much as I'm loathe to agree with ZH, it's a relevant point that the track needs to be replaced in its entirety in the event I live long enough to see the...I'm going to call it the 'Western Crescent' line reinstated for pax services.

I took a detour coming back from the Bendigo model railway show this afternoon to check out this work. So far 2 crossings have been done.

One thing i can't figure out is how they got nine crossings? Even with private crossing, the only way to get nine in Castlemaine would be to count the ones used by VGR (which are still there)

Still to be done:

This one shows the track condition a little better!

The news talked about Castlemaine area - probably includes those out through Campbells Creek and towards Guildford.

I see the regional growth fund for the Mt Alexander shire includes $822.000 towards a walking and cycling track from Castlemaine to Newstead.
So I wonder.........Are they going to pull the line up to build this track ?

Now that the rail crossings have been removed, would they need to be grade separated if the line were to be reopened?

Probably not. The amount of traffic would not warrant it.

No, the policy is no NEW crossings, this would not be a new crossing, merely a reopened crossing.

I would say that's the Government bureaucrats evil plan to bury the line future In an Icy tomb.

As I have said there are 100's of former level crossings around the State that still have rails Imbedded In the road pavement, they only get removed If there Is a pressing maintenance Issue with the road surface around the abandon rails and when the road gets reconstructed, realigned or widened.

I noticed on a recent Sunday drive along the Midland Hwy between Showell's Hill, near Campbells Creek and Yandoit/Guildford that the line has recently been completely lifted and sleepers removed. Perhaps the rail trail is finally on its way.

The VGR has been reclaiming track for their line.
They've been documenting it on their blog: https://vgrcivil.blog/
