V/Line Incidents/Disruptions #2

Yet another bizarre PIDS / platform experience at Footscray this morning. With the Down Warnambool a non runner and the Down Swan Hill being delayed by the late arrival of the motive power off of a Bacchus Marsh service (or so I was told.......) there was already a fair bit of confusion on the platform.

With the Swan Hill showing as 3 mins out the PIDS suddenly changed to show the Down South Geelong as being the next train which duly arrived about a minute later. As it was sitting in the platform the automated announcement was saying that the next train to depart P4 was the Swan Hill so guess what? Yep, a bunch of Swan Hill pax boarded the V/lo for Geetroit.

The Swan Hill was next to arrive over 10 minutes late by this stage and then had to make an unscheduled stop at Sunshine to pick up the very confused pax who had since realised that they had boarded the wrong train. Yet again not a good look V/Line.

It's called efficiency - lack of.

Surely it can't be beyond the wit of man to have accurate information given to the station staff.

Luckily the unscheduled stop was arranged.

Is the station master at Footscray Basil Faulty?

There's a Station Master?!?!

Actually I am not sure there is any V/Line presence at Footscray in the morning, there was an on platform announcer like the one they have in the arvo for a while last year but has since vanished again.

From what I am told by Metro staff they get very little info from V/Line about delays etc and when they do they are usually provided too late to take action.

The bigger problem is that you have 3 conflicting systems, the PIDS, the automated platform announcements (which seem to be triggered when a service is 2 Min from the station) and the manual override announcements done by station staff.

In this case there was no auto announcement for the South Geetroit (no idea why) which made it even worse!

For years and years NSW station staff have had access to precise train position information fed from Control. Once on a terminal in the station office and now on iPads. The mind boggles that we haven’t managed to work out a similar thing here.

I have long heard that the interfaces between the various systems – TCMS at Metrol, Centrol, the PRIDE PID system, V/Line’s PIDs, the Southern Cross PIDs, the Flinders St PIDs (the last two both, er, bespoke) the PTV API, the disruptions feeds produced by Metro and V/Line comms staff – are fundamentally broken and as a consequence very fragile. Thus any data station staff have coming from one of these sources is more likely than not to disagree with something else.

It’s truly frightening to think how bad things might have been had the rail telecom not remained in VicTrack’s all-encompassing hands...

A heap of delays and cancellations on the Bendigo line this afternoon due to a(nother) lightening strike at Kangaroo Flat damaging equipment.

And it wouldn't be Friday without yet another drug addled drunk fare evading loser getting kicked off the train.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I don't know how the Connies do it for the money.

And finally for those who have been following the Victorian Power Crisis thread I have headed off to Melbourne to see the Ms after yet another major power blackout in Castlemaine meant that we couldn't dispatch any orders at work. This one has been going for at least 3 hours so far and is the 3rd or 4th major outage that we have had in the last 2 weeks. Hopeless.

Here's something different.  Industrial action on the Ballarat line means no trains today.  But the replacement buses aren't going anywhere either due to an accident on the Freeway:

storms through the west look to have caused issues at Wyndham vale. Thanks to trackworks on the metro side tonight no diversions via werribee possible.

Major delays again on the Bendigo line this afternoon due to yet another "track fault", this time between Sunbury and Gisbourne.

Whatever it is, it's causing the cancellation of half the trains on the line this afternoon.

I guess I was lucky that the AM Down Swanners made it through unscathed. If it is a landslip then we probably caused it banging and thumping our way up the grade!

Now it's called a "Track Fault".  What a circus:

So from that you would have to assume that they managed to get the line open again (I don't recall being on that service.......) but nothing on my V/Line feed it just rolled straight from the "track fault" into the scheduled cancellations this evening for track works.

The unruly passenger had probably been drinking at Network, the bar at Southern Cross, for 8 hours or so waiting for a train.......

Not likely to be any trains to Albury for the next few days, Melbourne bound XPT derailed at Wallan this evening, with 5 or more vehicles off the rails and the leading power car on its side in the dirt.

I hope all on board are ok.

The challenges for Vline continue today with the Seymour Line  down and now issues on the Bendigo Line.

Folks,

We already have a thread for the XPT derailment available HERE. I'd ask you keep this thread for V/Line specific issues and not post anything related to the XPT incident. Tweets etc from V/Line detailing delays and bustitutions until the line is reopened are fine but not commentary or photos on the incident itself.

With this being the second traincrew fatality in as many months, I'd really like to have to monitor just two specific threads to stop any speculation or rumours before they start.

Thanks for your help,
KR.

And the circus just keeps rolling on this morning. The first 2 Down trains this morning didn't stop at Clarkefield or Riddells.

I assume (always dangerous I know) that one track is booked out and all trains are using one road in the section between Sunbury and Gisbourne?

Therefore they are pushing trains through the section as fast as possible to clear it for the next opposing service to run.

If that is the case then the Dn Swanners will be interesting as it crosses one and sometimes 2 Up services in that section depending on how close to timetable everything is.
  Carnot Minister for Railways

Bustitutions on some Bendigo services this morning now.
