Bushfire damages from Mt Victoria to Lithgow,

It has now been almost half a year since the cessation of electric services on the Blue Mountains line beyond Mt Victoria, the line is still not open and all diesel hauled services are very limited along with freight, the process of rebuilding has taken far longer than expected with all wiring and signalling unavailable resulting in the forced use of temporary systems

The buildings at the former Newnes Junction station have apparently been destroyed and some rumours have said that one of Zig Zags platforms has been destroyed or badly damaged, similar rumours have spread about Bell station

My questions are, what is the timeline for a potential reopening and have any stations been destroyed

I believe that today, a 4 car V set was used to run Mt Vic to Lithgow and return.

Seems to be getting closer.

I wish I could answer you! I have tried looking  and asking directly for information about this, but it is very hard to come by.
Just a great wall of silence from NSW TrainLink.
Doesn't anyone in charge there care?
Are they hoping that no-one will notice or that the citizens of Lithgow have forgotten that they once had a regular train service?

TrainLink would find that people would be more forgiving if they provided updates and brought their customers along for the ride, so to speak. If there are issues in obtaining replacement equipment or the expertise needed to do the job, it is better to be up front than try and hide it. That's why all we have at the moment are rumours and hearsay.

Having driven past Bell station on numerous occasions, I can vouch the station buildings being intact.

There were works crews replacing overhead wiring some months back - it is a while since i have travelled that way.

Coalies from Bell and, more recently, Airly have been operating. And the Bathurst Bullet (which I saw on Thursday morning).

you are right that the current policy is zero communication - as if passengers don’t exist.

Sounds like the old State Rail Authority mantra is still alive and well - "Passengers are Pests".

What a load of hot air from silly people on here. They have mentioned many times that with the covid 19 issues that they were bringing forward work on the projects to make the line compatible with the new D set fleet. A V set was tested recently which if any of you here were on the NSW trainlink, SETS or NSW railways past and present facebook pages you would know.

It was mentioned that the carlingford line over head was recycled and used on the burnt out sections as well if any of you even know how to use google you would know this.

The SETS page has not been updated in over 3 months, there is no NSW Trainlink official page, there is nothing about it on the Sydney Trains page and I was only asking because they had been absolutely silent since January

Not all of us have a facebook account which is necessary to view NSW railways past and present

I asked for information before anything about the test was announced and to get answers for my questions about the damages to stations that not one person from Sydney trains or NSW Trainlink have answered

All of the thing you have mentioned that you can find through googling are not able to be found

In the immediate aftermath of the fires, I spoke with a traffic officer who was going "on-loan" to assist with safe-working in the area. He said the best estimate was a return to normal service in around 6 months. I laughed, prematurely, as it has turned out.

AFAIK there are still many signals booked out between Mt Victoria and Coal Stage, with axle counters installed to ensure nothing "goes missing"

Apparently, it’s scheduled to reopen on the 29th of May 2020. The test involving set V5 was reportedly a success with no issues reported during the test run.

My information is from the 9th of May, two days ago so the date NSWRcars has provided is probably more accurate and up to date.

Normal signalling was restored on the Newnes Jct to Lithgow section on Friday 8 May, replacing axle counters between Newnes Jct and Oakey Park. Non electric working in both directions now without restrictions.

On the 16th of april sydney trains shows on their facebook page the installation of a temporary signal box.

The SETS FB page had images of the v set in the burnt out area 2 days ago doing testing. So may I suggest that if you want information that you get yourself a facebook account and get connected to the sites I mentioned because they are way more informative then Railpage is.

The line is now scheduled to reopen sometime this weekend

I now have found that Newnes Junction was partially destroyed by the fire, the platforms are still intact but the signal box has been badly damaged

Sydney Trains website has a new timetable on its website, commencing 24 May, that includes resumption of service to/from Lithgow.

This box was being kept as a heritage item, but the actual junction with Clarence Colliery loop is controlled remotely from Blacktown.

And that has been the case for a while now. The Newnes Junction platforms have been out of use even longer. Soon to be followed by Mt Victoria and the 2 Lithgow yard boxes. And that's it for NSW boxes.

24 May is the re-opening date according to the relevant STNs.
