Major cuts to the ABC

Can't believe the 7.45am news bulletin will be cut.  Makes no sense at all.

Lots of other cuts especially in Sydney to ABC roles.

Shocking.

How will we get educated about the racism inherent in a game of chess?
  Carnot Minister for Railways

I think the most interesting plan is to decentralize operations and news gathering away from Sydney and instead direct resources to the regions.  Probably a good move imo, especially with Murdoch abandoning them.

Shame about the 7:45am news I suppose. A bit of a national institution that one.

About time that the ABC got back to doing what it should; providing the basics like weather, objective reporting of important local news, and light entertainment. For too long it has been nothing but a political mouthpiece. There are plenty of options these days if you want to read the gauchist tripe the current ABC spews out. Taxpayers shouldn't have to fund these so called elites who think they have the duty to tell us how to live our lives. Amusing that the ABC has spent so much time and energy bagging the Tories, and now when the same people hold the purse-strings, the firebrands are squealing ike stuck-pigs.

One billion dollars a year!   About time some of the fat was cut.  Plenty more to go!  Keep cutting.

I used to love the ABC.  It was the only source of unbiased news and comments about society and the world.  Unfortunately that was 30 years ago.  I will not watch it now because of its extreme bias.  This is not in accordance with it's charter.  It is purposed to present factual news, events and comment in an unbiased manner.

Since then the ABC has moved so far to the left it is almost falling over.  Even the news is presented in a leftist manner, cutting video and interviews to show outlandish misrepresentations of the real situation.  Commentators are just self opinionated stooges today.  If any do not follow the script they are humiliated and denigrated.  A good example of this is how David Speers has been mistreated on Insiders.  I did try and watch this for a while but he has now capitulated to the mob rule.

I have no problem with them showing diverse points of view (provided they are not extreme).  However todays ABC (and SBS) will only present diverse views with one bias, and many of these viewpoints are extreme (and in bad taste).

QA and Media Watch are two of the most ridiculously biased programs I have never seen.  They pretend to be balanced and objective but anyone with any common sense and intelligence can see the stacked panels, audiences and editing that is used to present their ridiculous agendas.  Even the moderators display extreme bias, not questioning left wing calls for violence, but denigrating anyone that challenges this viewpoint.

Any common sense is punished at the expense of division, hatred and vilification.  Only the vicious left partake in this obsessive manner.

There have been no funding cuts (another myth perpetrated by the lefty trolls).  Programming changes are not cuts as such, just a running management decision to reallocate resources.

The ABC should be defunded until or unless it gets its house in order.

My view is this should have happened a long time ago.  It has never been 'Our ABC" with fat cats sitting in a very expensive office in Sydney leaving the remainder of the country to persist with poorly made sydney trash. Other states do have programmes Melbourne has quite a few high profile programs coming out of there.

About time they pushed the people into the regional offices and other capitals and with it the programming decisions.

A few thoughts:

“Left-wing bias”, I prefer to characterise as pursuing a particular political line. Example, the racism in chess segment.

Renewed focus on the regions - about time. Rupert’s people run a business for profit - there is no community service obligation and, although we do love our local papers, they have withered into a mirror of the big city outlets anyway- mostly syndicated Sydney headlines.

ABC’s current offering to regional Australia is.....”country wide”. An excellent program but, with ABC supposedly being “our abc”, it’s pretty thin if you live outside the state capitals. And it isn’t expected to make a profit - just live within its means.

Actually, my best local news comes from commercial tv, which offers up a local bulletin from orange, as well as the national reports.

The other one I find amusing, not just on RP but many other social channels, is that everything media-wise is viewed the the prism of Rupert and (choose media outlet here - could be SMH, or ABC or whatever) .... the one remaining good guy. Pleas for media diversity conveniently overlook that other options do exist - Nine Entertainment (tv plus the former Fairfax papers), Guardian, Ten (owned by CBS of the USofA, but pursuing a younger-focussed, hence slightly left-leaning, segment), Seven (controlled by Kerry Stokes, hence arguably Murdoch-friendly - I actually find Seven impartial), for SA readers there is InDaily. It isn’t a binary choice of Murdoch’s monolith vs a single remaining player. Diversity exists if you look for it.

I doubt they can as most of the commercial press spouts far right talking points. It only gets accused of being 'far left' as its a public service and it attempts to be balanced.

I've never heard so much garbage in all my life and you have the gall to pontificate about bias.  If there is any bias in the media, it's the Murdoch gutter press.  Murdoch has a pathological hatred of the ABC and the former Fairfax Press now owned by Nine.  Through his media outlets, he will go out of his way to denigrate the ABC and anyone else who dares to challenge his view of the world.  According to the gospel of Lord Rupert, and this filters through to all of the News media, anyone who offers an opinion contrary to his is immediately branded a "leftie" no matter how factual and balanced.

How you can accuse the ABC of "extreme bias", even including the news, beggars belief.  You wouldn't know what balanced reporting is if it hit you in the face.  Just because you don't agree with it, don't denigrate others who have a different point of view.  That's what a free press is all about.

As for David Speers, he is universally acknowledged as being one of Australia's most respected journalists.  Since leaving Sky News and going to the ABC, he is no longer hamstrung in toeing the Murdoch line and can express his unbiassed opinions without fear or favour.  Why do you think he left Sky?  If you don't like balanced reporting, then that's your problem.  It's a myth that the ABC and the former Fairfax papers have a left wing bias.  All they are doing is offering balanced opinions which those of your ilk can't comprehend.

If the LNP continues in its quest to neuter the ABC, then I think you will find that there would be a groundswell of opposition, which would include a significant proportion of Coalition voters who are a big part of its audience.
  Carnot Minister for Railways

I still reckon axing the 7:45am news is a bad move. But with News Radio pumping out 15min (National) news bulletins all day, could that be used instead in that timeslot?

Meanwhile, the ABC luvvies are all upset that some of the 'sheltered workshop' sections of the ABC are getting axed.

Overall though I have a (late) Tim Fischer (bless his soul), rather than an IPA (burn it down) view of the importance public media.

The Greens are antisemites. 'Marrickville boycots Israeli products!' Massive Stanley steamer. But back to ABC. It seems like only yesterday they were tut-tutting and offering all sorts of commentry about how irresponsible the American Right  are for organising No Lockdown rallies, how Trump's event in Tulsa would lead to an explosion in cases and so on. Today they've got a 'fact check' banging on about how the increase in cases in Victoria has nothing to do with recent BLM protests, that it's all to do with family gatherings. But later on they've got an article about irresponsible behaviour and there's a picture of Arabic men in Broadmeadoww kissing. So I'll give the ABC that, at least they put that picture although some here will probably be doing a song and  dance about how that stigmatises the Arabic community, so it's racist  and shouldn't be shown.

The relevant health authorities have a pretty good handle on where the new infections are occurring in Victoria. The big BLM protest is acknowledged as having not contributed much if anything. However, Andrews' mistake was in failing to have the protest banned, because that sent the wrong message about gatherings. Family and similar groups have no doubt caused a number of new cases; some groups don't understand, some don't care and, as we saw on Seven news last night, some are in absolute denial. The other big failing is the quarantine hotels. Lack of proper training for the minders has led to too many infections being passed on.
