I was chatting to my Yarraville friends this afternoon and they were amazed that we've never - ever - had to wear masks in public in this state. We have also never needed an excuse to be out of the house or had time or distance limits on where we can be. And now things are pretty much normal here compared to Dictator Dan's world.

There's enough COVID in Melbourne to keep this thing bubbling away forever. By then the joint should be completely wreaked - but people in nursing homes will be safe from COVID at least.

Have you considered the difference between an Individualist Liberal government and a Collectivist Labor government?

Looking at the COVID-19 stats, the difference appears to be that the former has the ability to bring people together to achieve a mutually beneficial outcome while the latter has resulted in a diseased gulag.

The problem actually appears to be that the “collectivist” ALP government is actually incredibly individualistic, similar to the situation that Khrushchev denounced in his famous speech. There are authenticated English translations available, you might be interested in having a read.

Regarding the federal governments role in implementing the measures required to slow spread of the coronavirus;

- Social Security is a federal head of power as per the Australian Constitution.

This means that the federal government has the power to make laws establishing and regulating access to welfare payments for the aged, disabled, students, unemployed, families, and veterans. An example of this in action would be the federal government legislating that all workers who lose their job as a result of the coronavirus are entitled to an increased jobseeker payment with no mutual obligations.

- As per the Australian Constitution, any power not explicity granted to the federal government shall be left to the states.

This means that subjects of regulation which stray outside of the Social Security power are to be left to the states to legislate and enforce. An example of this in action would be each of the six state governments deciding seperately on the times, places, and manner of businesses and services to be closed down during the pandemic because emergency management is a state government responsbility.

Regarding Dandrews decision to implement a 5 KM movement limit during the recent Melbourne Lockdowns;

- At the end of the day, the line had to be drawn somewhere, with the intent to limit movement of potential spreaders of coronavirus so no matter what number was chosen some destinations would have fallen on the wrong side of the magic line.

I assume 5 KM was chosen as the magic number because, on one hand it allows both sufficient excercise distance for housebound adults to burn off their pent up energy and for most households to be within travelling distance of a major shopping centre where they can purchase essential supplies, on the other hand it prevents potentially virus spreading people from travelling to too many faraway places for non essential reasons such as joyriding around the suburbs on the trains taking photos.

- Another example is the drinking age being set at 18 and not 15 or 21.

I am sure there are some very mature 15 year olds who could handle a nice cold can of beer while relaxing after a long hard day helping their old man at work, just as i am also sure that there are some very inmature 21 year olds who cant handle a few drinks out on the town because they turn into violent animals with no hope of rational thinking whatsoever, but again for the sake of administrative simplicity a line needs to be drawn here too and for the vast majority of people, when weiging up all of the costs and benefits, 18 is a logical legal age for drinking.

Melbourne is opening back up as of 11:59pm tonight so I understand, there may be a few restrictions in place still though.

If there is no resurgence in the next couple of weeks, I think they should remove the requirement for outdoor mask wearing.

Personally I don't think masks should have ever been required outdoors...and as previously noted, a substantial portion of people I encounter outside seem to actively agree.

I will still do it, but I am really not keen on wearing a mask all through summer well into 2021.

Three hours out on the bike today:

• Fewer than 10% of walkers encountered were wearing masks correctly.
• 90% not wearing masks or only partly wearing masks (noses uncovered) or carrying their masks.
• The usual handful of joggers but today those not/improperly wearing masks were again, almost exclusively, relatively young females. There were fewer macho young men today.

The USA is losing about 1000 people per day to Covid. Probably looking at 500000 dead by February.

For comparison, about 2.8 million Americans die each year.  Of that, anywhere between 12000 and 60000 die of influenza. So it is a significant mortality rate.

Today I had lunch and a walk at Heidelberg. I would be surprised if 50% of people were wearing masks correctly. The young and beautiful were the worst offenders; one walking along with her head down over her phone and the mask draped around her right elbow.
Complacency is dangerous, but the "I'm bulletproof" syndrome is alive and well.

On my rare journeys out I see this every time, people of all ages wear masks incorrectly, a lot wear them under their nose, and even a few with no mask at all, even people pretending to be on their mobile phones, ahah umm umm OK, umm ohh... it's quite funny to watch, it really would be easier just to have a mask on properly get your stuff done and leave

Some people just enjoy challenging rules even if there is no material benefit in doing so.  A Spanish plane passenger bought a pack of chips and ate it slowly for 4 hours, just to have a valid reason not to wear a mask on the plane.

But I could go down to the beach, where there Is no one within 10 metres of me and I'm required to wear a mask !

How are people goin to cop wearing a mask when the ambient temperature starts to regally get above the high 20's (not everyone has the luxury of working In a climate controlled work environment.

Take someone who works outdoors In Mildura where the Summer temperature regularly gets above 40 (Masks on the Vic side of the River, no masks required on the NSW side.

My workplace that's In a undercover workshop (always at ambient outside temperature) many workmates are suffering at the end of a 8 hour day from wearing masks (many get eye Irritations)
I get It a lot easier at I use a Powered Air Purifying Respirator most of the day and get away with only having to wear a mask less than a hour a day, but others battle It out with a mask for 10 hours.

If we can wear it in a stinking hot and humid Dubai 4 mth long Summer including inside the even hotter aluminium smelter where I work in full woolen PPE, I'm sure the Victorian's will manage in their generally drier and cooler climate.

Yup, there is pretty standard practice globally, although the smoking bit is not acceptable here in a situation where you would normally be required to wear a mask and also you are not allowed to walk around with a beverage drinking. You must be seated or at a standing table. There are some valid reasons why this is done and while the reasons are not bullet proof, they do seem to be working and better than pre-covid conditions at limiting the spread.

I know where your coming from, that people are accustomed to wearing full PPE In hot humid conditions.

But this Is Victoria Australia people ain't accustomed to wearing PPE that restricts their breathing.

Word on the Street Is people are really suffering under the rules, and as we head Into Summer the worse the negative health Impacts will become.

You need to ask people on the Street this, as the Government (DHHS) won't (they have Covid19 tunnel vision with the blinkers on)
