    Any reason why this has become a problem of late has there been significant rain?

    ARTC would also have to come to the table on weed management as they have responsibility on the corridor like Victrack.

    Maybe just maybe the operators have not been keeping up their contractors and are trying to save money.  Send the Job Seeker teams to the rescue.

    Contractors under V/line would most likely have the contract to keep the weeds down and this is why they are a problem.

    Wouldn’t that corridor be ARTC? Am pretty sure they have all responsibilities, including maintenance of shared equipment (level crossings, phone wires...errrrhh)

    The weeds along the Gippsland line are well out of control.   Its not just a NE issue.

    The embankments between Warragul and Yarragon are covered in blackberries.   Between Yarragon and Trafalgar they used to slash the easement every year.  They haven't done so for many years now and there is weeds everywhere.   The blackberry patches are huge, 10ft tall now.  Its obvious Vline have dropped the ball here.

    Perhaps it's just me, but I thought all the lines were in very fairly shabby state, most have phalaris 6' high along them, plenty have that bloody box thorn shrub. I reckon a lot of lines are just a weed and pest haven's.

    A while back, when the crew were having a 'bit' of a cleanup along the Heywood line and in particular right near Mum's house, they have left big mounds of shrubbery that should have been burnt long before summer and it's still there. A while back there was another crew doing a track inspection and she asked one of the blokes what was happening with the mess and he said it was a NSW gang that was supposed to be cleaning the joint up but the budget got cut, end of story.

    Anyhow do they still run weed spraying trains, have seen plenty of picture and saw this the other day, although they are more than likely spraying 24D Shocked

    By now, the relevant authorities supposed to maintain the tracks must have the world's biggest "Too Hard" baskets. All the things that were routine - locally-based gangers, the Weedex train et al served the railways, and hence the public, well. Ah! . .progress. I am personally pleased that the Spirit of Progress has vanished. It would be a travesty to use the term today.

    Back in 83 (I'm feeling really old now...) I worked in Upper Ferntree Gully. I went for a walk one lunchtime along the rail trail that runs parallel to the line and got covered by the overspray from a weed wagon being hauled by a flat top T. It just had a Z guards van on the rear.

    I've always wondered what they were using...

    Anyway, back on topic - I have seen hi-rail utes with boom sprays. I suspect weed spraying is more targeted now.

    Correct, though they do use small trucks with a large tank on the back to cover larger sections. It's not that targeted though, just limited to when the weedspray can go down so it can penetrate

    Not sure how things will pan out for you RustyRick, but my old deceased mate told me most of the blokes who used to be rostered on the weedex trains are no longer with us...hence no weedex train, probably due to OHS.

    Perhaps one drenching of spray won't be enough to activate those miscreant cells, but I would have looked into this more thoroughly by now.

    Every time I use Roundup at my station I think about it.

    The weed issue is a bit bigger than what a hirail can address from the track.   Its weeds within the property.

    Of note the Vline careers pages has many positions for arborists and vegetation management people right now

    That thought has crossed my mind more than once. Along with working with asbestos water mains, smoking for 15 years, and eating blackberries that had also been sprayed.

    Yes the goats at Upper Ferntree Gully have become a bit of a popular attraction for young families from what I’ve seen. They’re also used on the hilly north side towards 1000 Steps.

    No wonder the Belgrave line rides so rough, it's been a goat track all along! Last time I was at UFG the platforms still had old style jointed tracks that must have been from the turn of last century. Weren't they banned on main lines 70-odd years ago when jointed track became a thing?
