Double track and extension of Morwell Loop.

The improvements include duplicating track, extending the Morwell crossing loop, upgrading level crossings and signalling, adding second platforms at three stations along the line and reactivating the second platform at Traralgon.

The second platform at Morwell Station has been redesigned after consultation with Latrobe City Council and the local community to improve connectivity with the bus interchange.

Darren Chester said the works would allow Traralgon trains to travel every 40-minute between the peaks and give passengers a more reliable service.

What are the 3 stations receiving a second platform in the works?

Traralgon is getting a second platform well it is really an upgrade if you read the fine print.

Not totally clear

The upgrade features a second platform at Traralgon Station to enable more frequent and reliable services. It will include a new accessible pedestrian overpass, as well as other accessibility and amenity improvements for better passenger journeys. Construction on the Gippsland Line Upgrade is targeted for completion in late 2022.

Apart from a railmotor dock platform for the Mirboo North line at the UP end its only ever had a single platform.

Leaving only Moe between Melbourne and Traralgon?

More opportunities for Gippsland passengers to crawl along at 40km/h for the entire length of the Pakenham line.

I can't wait for that one.

At this stage yes. Earlier promotional material put out by the government included duplication through Moe, which I would assume included a second platform, but that got quietly removed from the list of upgrades sometime ago. It can be done, but with the Moe library/council service center being built so close opposite the existing platform it would require substantially more work than Longwarry etc.

I visited a Information show and tell In Morwell about 2 years ago, and asked about the proposed duplication at Moe, but couldn't get an straight answer, just round and round In circles spin.

The existing Moe Railway Station can not be duplicated under the the existing design rules, they would have to relocate the railway station around the corner (towards Trafalgar) so both platforms are straight.

That would be the easiest and cheapest option. A while ago the grapevine suggested they were considering realigning the approach either side of the current location in order to get a sufficient length of straight track. As much as I detest lowering speeds during upgrades, dropping the curve speed through Moe from 90 to something like 60 to achieve this would make no difference to running times for V/Line services as its in the braking zone for Moe anyway. The guys on the Maryvale may not be too pleased about it though.

In doing so, the existing Moe platform would need to be renewed or rebuilt (to make It straight) so wouldn't It be easier cheaper to build 2 new platforms on a new site (keeps passenger services running during construction.

Grade separation of Waterloo Road / Lloyd Street level crossing would be a nice to have project done at the same time.

The article states more trains how many more will be added to the timetable and what is passenger loading like on the Gippsland line?

Good question. As no third rail was installed from Caulfield to Dandenong during the level crossing removal, there will inevitably be limits to how many extra trains can be added here. That was an opportunity squandered.

Lots of coin has been invedted by V/Line into the Gippsland Line but trolling back over threads there is not much around extension of the number of services mainly and only about the use of vlocity units.  Does not seem the timetable has changed much so will this help?

Honestly the biggest kneecap to adding services is the current single line sections on Vline rather than a maybe useful 3rd track on a section that you might as well build 4 tracks for on the Metro.

How many trains would more come down to rollingstock, and how often Vline can cross trains/terminate trains and turn them back.

Does not sound like there is a plan for more services for often for Gippsland ?

The Gippsland line has the highest amount of local travel, than any other line In Victoria.

By local travel I assume you mean for example, Moe to Traralgon? Or similar journeys.

Yes. My experience of travelling on the Gippsland line certainly has a "commuter" feel about it. I've seen people board at Drouin and get off at Warragul, Yarragon and Trafalgar seem to generate local traffic to either Warragul or Moe/ Morwell. On a mid- afternoon up from Traralgon, the peace and tranquility of a quiet journey was shattered at Trafalgar when the 3 car Vlo. was invaded by hundreds of noisy school students! They progressivly got off at stations right up to Pakenham.Very Happy

Yes you could probably put on shuttles between Drouin and Traralgon (between existing services) and they would be well used.

I know that service, I was meant to arrive Into Southern Cross Railway Station at 17:33 but was doing well If It got there before 18:00 (the resent timetable change has It's arrival put down as later now)

Can confirm, as someone who used to live in one of the "hamlets1" between Pakenham and Drouin according to people of this forum, catching the train to Warragul you'd see about 75% of the people that were on when you got on, get off the train by Warragul, and just as many getting on for stations down the line.

1Tynong/Nar Nar Goon maybe but Garfield & Bunyip are growing in line with state averages.
