And what are you, my biographer now?

I don’t know DirtyBallast, it strikes me as dangerous both ways to claim either ‘unprecedented’ if it’s thought there might be preceding events, OR claim ‘precedent’ if there’s only thought to be preceding events.

I think Flannery’s claims of unprecedented fires are dubious in accuracy at best, possibly entirely incorrect.

For what it’s worth, I think the both sides of the ‘debate’ about arson being natural or otherwise are on sketchy ground too. Arson is by definition a man made condition, it’s an act of deliberate undertaking.

On the flip side, you can go to a store and buy ‘natural wheat/fruit/vegetables’ and yet they only exist by purely man made conditions too.

Try telling Aboriginal groups that still believe in carrying out the process of burning to assist food collection etc that they’re undertaking an in natural process - I suspect they likely have court rulings labelling their acts of arson (let’s call it what it is, they’re intentionally spreading and/or setting a fire) as ‘natural’.

Difference is, firestick farming didn't result in flames reaching the crowns of the trees. Apart from that, fair enough.

I don't know what the answer is - and what difference does it make how it started anyway.

Well, YOU'RE the one who made a big song and dance about the majority of fires being caused by arson. Are you now admitting that what you said was pointless?

I really don't understand what it is you're trying to do here - you're so focused on trying to catch me out you completely missed the fact that I was talking about an author's assertion in a book and not about my own opinion.

Get therapy for your Don Dunstan obsession. Not the first poster here to fall under my wily charms and become totally fixated on me - and probably not the last.

Plans for an electric car factory in Gippsland have officially collapsed with the Andrews government refusing to reveal how much VIC taxpayer money was lost in the deal - MSN/ABC;

A planned electric vehicle factory in Victoria's Latrobe Valley, which was expected to create 500 jobs, will not go ahead after the company involved pulled out.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews announced the deal with SEA Electric ahead of the 2018 election. The deal was meant to create jobs in the region, which is home to Victoria's coal-fired power stations, after the Hazelwood plant closed in 2017.

News of the project's demise comes amid a renewed focus on electric vehicles after the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow

Documents released to the ABC under Freedom of Information show the factory was meant to be built by December 2019.

But amid questioning before Parliament's Public Accounts and Estimates Committee (PAEC) yesterday, the government revealed SEA Electric had advised it last month of its desire to end the agreement.

The government has refused to say how much money had been paid to the company or whether any had been repaid, saying the matter was commercial in confidence.

Probably not even a drop in the ocean compared to the $150,000,000,000 Dan has already accumulated in debt for future generations of Victorians to pay off.

Dan's imagined debt has no place in this thread.

SEA Electric failed to meet the required criteria to demonstrate that they would have been viable in setting up this facility. If the governmemnt did initially give them some money to prove their business case, and they failed to do so, then it was obviously money well spent. Saved a fortune compared to eventual failure.

As it turned out, it's not like it was needed anyway. Buried deep in the following article from only six weeks ago are the words "Many of the gloomy predictions made for the Latrobe Valley ahead of the Hazelwood closure have not eventuated. In August this year there were more people employed in the Latrobe-Gippsland region – 130,100 – than in November 2014, an increase of 6700 workers, or 5.4 per cent."

Power shift: The Latrobe Valley looks for a new future, again (theage.com.au)

The Latrobe Valley region is actually booming at the moment don_dunstan. Annoyingly for you, it correlates with a lesser reliance on coal fired electricity generation.

I have a friend that is fluent in Scottish graffiti, proper Scott girl, some days barely understandable when speaking, left Scotland at 23 and just became citizen - goes from very sweet to quite spicy in the blink of an eye if someone brings up the English.

To quote her.

Replace the ‘double you’ with ‘double lle’, their a sayin she’s a scrote, aye.

When I posted in a different thread that these ‘conferences’ were by and large a waste of time and resources and all of this could be achieved ‘over the phone’ you said ‘it’s all necessary because it all happens behind the scenes’.

Yet here we are, with possibly the biggest deal on CO2 reduction ever made all essentially done over virtual meetings and other meetings in Shanghai and Washington (each meaning presumably only half the people needed to travel) so COP26 not really required it seems.

There’s still the more salient point, that even if COP26 credits itself, or otherwise has credited to it, this Chinese/US deal and that deal goes south, gets to hard to achieve, or is just otherwise ignored or abandoned, COP26 will still have achieved zero, just like Rio, Kyoto and (so far) Paris.

Contract signing (and the US/China have not signed a contract) is often celebrated, but on issues like this, contract fulfilment is vastly more celebration worthy - and the world is a long way (like a dozen laps of our star) from that.

All they're going to do is lie just like they've been doing for the last several years.

I reckon Obama turned a blind eye to the colonisation of the South China Sea and the wholesale theft of intellectual property in exchange for them pretending to care about carbon emissions - and surprise! They were just lying.

Anyone who thinks that they're not lying this time around is a complete idiot and/or a Fairfax/ABC reader.

Like I said, they'll just lie like they did to Obama. They know there will be no consequences - they take us for idiots because we are.

EDIT: And did you even read the substance of the article you posted?

John Kerry, possibly the most useless carbon hypocrite ever since he won't deign to take a commercial aircraft anywhere, has come out with this lovely, warm, cuddly motherhood statement that he's got China to agree to that is completely meaningless. What it says is this:

The document released on Wednesday promises the US and China will work together on emissions reductions and an accelerated phase-out of unabated coal, however timelines were not listed.

The statement also binds China to tackle damaging methane emissions and deforestation, while both countries have agreed to share technology and expertise on clean energy, decarbonisation and electrification.

I've highlighted the really important bits for you to read and comprehend, Mike, because its apparent that you like a lot of other people suffer from some kind of terrible myopia when it comes to what the Chinese Communist Party is really doing. Let me spell it out for you in plain English: They're lying.

The only reason they've agreed to this facile document is because it allows them to steal even more intellectual property from the West and profit on selling it back to them cheaper than it can be made in the developed world because they're building more coal-fired power plants than ever and can make even more money on the back of that cheap electricity. They have no intention whatsoever of giving up their strategic advantage over the West - this is again another way in which they can leap-frog over us and acquire more industry and more technology while we rot into the ground.

And you seriously think this is a good thing?

You have no idea what you are talking about. You cannot,... nor can I actually say what discussions were held behind the scenes, but I bet London to a brick, a lot of it over the past few months was face to face.
