Must be a rare event and apparently caused by a failed set of points at Broadmeadows.
Would route knowledge for this diversion be ubiquitous among V/Line passenger drivers, or was it sheer good luck that a suitably qualified driver was at the helm?Either the Driver was qualified on the route, or they used some fine print in the rule book for emergencies to allow the train to go over the path. Would imagine someone with a trainer/instructor level ticket would have to know all tracks, or that qualification would give them the ability to traverse the line. A whole lot of if's but's and maybes.
I have always thought electrify the line between jacana and albion and also sunshine toJacana to Albion could be done, however Sunshine to Newport not a chance. Newport the line is singled with no access to the platforms and very little space.
Newport and there you have additional optionality for Newport and Broadmeadows services. New routing.
There are about a dozen VLP drivers qualified on the Albion-Jacana line. That is an improvement; they were using some of the heritage workings to gain/refresh their route knowledge. I think a couple of supervisors are qualified as well.Does V/Line have a suitable simulator they could use to train & qualify crew over a corridor such as this?
Qube has their own in house driversAt least V/Line or the signaller took some initiative to unblock the system and provide the service. Well Done. Also many Melbourne based drivers would be qualified for Jacana to Sunshine etc as providing crews for the Apex quarry trains to Brooklyn and Westall
I have always thought electrify the line between jacana and albion and also sunshine toHaving lived in the area for decades, I often thought that doing as you suggested would have provided a sort of western rail loop service from jacana to Williamstown or Werribee line via a few new stops before the SRL idea came onto the scene.
Newport and there you have additional optionality for Newport and Broadmeadows services. New routing.
Average 13 standard gauge freight trains a day plus; plus "the Overdue" on 4 days a week.Unless dedicated tracks were provided, wouldn't electrifying the freight line rather defeat the purpose of having a separated freight path into/out of Melbourne?
How many freight trains use those lines per day?
