It just isn't straightforward that the Ukrainian people are all going to reject the Russians as invaders - some will welcome them as liberators.

What does speaking the language have to do with it? 80% of Americans speak English - what do you think most Americans would do if the English invaded America? What would New Zealand do if Australia invaded New Zealand? Probably 90% of New Zealanders speak English - so … we would only have to fight the Māori and New Zealand would be ‘Australia’s new East and South East Islands’?

Of course a lot of Ukrainians speak Russian, the languages are very similar and the country was wholly in the USSR - take a guess at what language most students before 1991 learnt in School, it probably wasn’t Bahasa Indonesia or Khmer.

My wife, father in law and Babcia were all born in Poland, Babcia can speak a Polish, German and Russian, the father in law speaks Polish and Russian, my wife Polish, English and Russian.

Sadly, they’re collectively a set of walking, talking signs of the times in Poland through the occupying years. Babcia forced to learn German in schools, then Russian under the Warsaw Pact (effectively occupation) years. My father in law, no choice but to learn Russian in school and at university under the effective communist occupation, my wife, briefly learning Russian in school before switching to English as soon as her father could find an appropriate English tutor.

Would any of them fight with or for the Russians today? You would have to be properly kidding yourself! They hate Putin and Russia, they hated him before he invaded Crimea, and they hate him more today, sure, they can all ‘speak the language’ but if Russia invades Poland they’ll be more inclined to try killing Russians than welcoming them.

Again, there is little evidence that the Ukrainians are any different, in fact, seemingly quite a lot evidence to suggest that Ukrainians are indeed not ‘welcoming’ the Russian invaders.

One of the biggest, and certainly fastest general population exits of a country in history. The direction they’re moving? West - which is notable for being not in the general direction of Russia.

If Russia are ‘liberating’ ethnic Russians (whom are actually ethnic Ukrainians - the Slavs originated in Ukraine) in the east of Ukraine, why the need to attempt to invade via another country and attempt to encircle the capital? Not many repressed Russians there, if they were, why didn’t they move east? If not to Russia, at least to one of the ‘majority’ Russian cities.

Don’t forget, we have moving picture footage of a Russian tank firing at a civilian in an apartment.
