I'm building a route at the moment for Trainz (not 2004) and am curious if there is a way I can build a passing siding on a single track main that will allow two trains on 'auto-pilot' to pass. On a test section I was able to get the two trains to meet at the siding easily enough, stopping at the signals, etc., but there doesn't appear to be a means for switching the points or making the train ignore the direction of a trailing point. Anyone have any ideas?

I thought it might be possible to do this with 'trigger' objects, and a scenario script, but I wouldn't have the faintest idea how to make one of those...

Unfortunately there is no way to achieve that in pre-TRS2004 versions of Trainz.

AI will simply drive to the signals, which are controlled on the state of your junctions, so to get them to pass needs you to chuck the switches for them.

Bummer... oh well, two further questions since I might be getting TRS2004 sometime soon:

1) How does it handle this situation?
2) Can I import my pre 2004 layout into it?

Thanks,

in answer to Q2, yes, you can import previous layouts to TRS. I have several, and i'm updating them with industries.

as for part 1, I was testing that exact situation last night, but ran out of time. I'll try again tomorrow, and advise of the results.

Yes you can get trains to cross at passing loops in TRS2004, takes a bit of trial and error but with the correct signalling, and perhaps using items such as priority markers and trackmarks, you can order drive-to commands to trains and they will sense the other train in the next block and will wait in the loop until it has passed.

The driver commands and rules that come with TRS2004 and on the DLS add such depth to the game when it comes to AI running that it really makes UTC look badly obsolete.

Wow - sounds like there's a lot on offer (I've been reading some of the fan sites on the net).

What's this First Class Ticket thing all about - sounds like something I should find in a chocolate bar Confused

Anyone who is registered with Trainz can download from the DLS - but the download speed is throttled back to about 3kb a second. That's not so bad if you leave your computers running at night, you just set the download to start before you go to bed and it's all over by the time you get up in the morning. There is also a monthly download limit AFAIK.

For something like $20.00 you get the first class ticket that allows you to download from the DLS at much greater speeds - I think I saw somewhere that it was as high as 48kb per second although I've never attained those speeds on ADSL - and there is no monthly dowload limit.

I'm still running on my 92 day freebie that came with the purchase of 2004 and I wouldn't hesitate to buy a first class ticket when the freebie expires.

Yes, the trains will pass in the passing loops, but the AI drivers are pretty stupid, one of them tried to reverse out of the loop to get through!

I figure with some planning and patience it can be done easily.

I stilll have the free ticket that came with my TRS purchase, but have never acctivated it. I still download at 4k's per second, and I have still never hit the Daily 100MB limit.

Having now played a reasonable bit of TRS 2004, I can concur that the drivers are stupid, but this can be mitigated by placing the signals, etc., in a sensible manner. I think the track direction markers also help make your intent more clear to the AI.

Hehe...

On a more serious note, I had a fault with TRS2004 where the program crashed as it was saving a route I was working on. The file was written out with zero length, and I lost everything.

Take note - back up your routes periodically to another part of your hard disk!
