Connex aren't doing too well either. Merge the two and put me in charge. Here's what I'll do:
1. Send the Nexas back to Germany and order more Xtrap. That will save heaps of platform work and make the fleet homogenous.
2. Keep the Hitachis in a bit longer and re-activate the 4D so there's more trains available, and run some very fast express services which can rival peak-time car travel speed.
3. Upgrade track for higher speeds and progressively grade-separate, especially the tram crossings.
4. Make individual people more responsible for the quality of their work. Various ways of doing this.
5. Increase off-peak services to 15min frequency even on Sunday nights at Pakenham.
6. Make an agreement with VLP to have Geelong effectively part of Met Zone 3.
I reckon that'll get at least some people out of their cars.

hi all,
as much as i would like to see the geelong line work with a metcard system, i strongly dout that VLP would agree to that, the geelong line is thier most money making (makes the smallest loss(i think) line. Although i agree with the other points.

Yeah that's why I want WCR to take over VLP. They got the Warrnambool line paying its way quite quickly, after being one of the worst lines on the system for some time.

1. How much will it cost you to pay out the contract for the supply of the Nexas trains that you unilaterally cancel?
2a. Given that new trains are already being delivered, it would be rather hard to justify the cost of re-activating the 4D on the grounds of needing the train.
2b. How do you run the very fast express services with the existing infrastructure? Or are you proposing that lots of extra tracks get built also? How much will that cost?
3. Is the cost justified (in dollar terms) by the benefits?
4. What people did you have in mind?
5. Can you be certain that the increased patronage that results from this will cover the increased costs? Or will your efforts end up the same way as National Express'.
6. I assume that you would want to increase services to cater for the additional passengers that would be attracted by the lower fares. If so, see my response to number 5.
I sympathise with your ideas. However, if you were running the railway in lieu of (say) Connex, you wouldn't have the money to do these things while the government is competing against you by providing roads for the motorists. Improving the rail system they way you (and I) would like will take a change in government attitude to support rail over road far more than they currently do.
