Hi All,
I've been wondering everytime i've gone past the reserve of the old siding, just what did they use it for, I understand it got dismantled in 1985 but none of my relatives never saw any operation on this siding.

Why was it closed?

Was it closed with the construction of the SG line or was it due to the lack of use?

When was the last time it was used?

and are there any photos of it in use?

Any help would be great

I don't know specifically why it was closed, but assume that the military no longer required it.  It certainly wasn't closed because of the standard gauge line, which was opened in 1962.  It had a diamond crossing with the standard gauge line.

I can't answer either of them, except that I have previously posted the following photograph which, by the way, was taken in 1987.

Broadstore siding was definitely out of use by the early 1980s, I recall.

Broadstore Siding is the one that went to the Broadmeadows Military Camp isn't it?

There were two level crossings for this siding at Railway Crescent and Blair Street, and once it went into the Military Camp itself it split into two tracks, one which went directly east for a short distance, and one which curved north-east for a longer distance.

I've always found it odd that the connection to the military camp was done from the Broadmeadows line rather than the Upfield line, which ran right alongside the the eastern boundary.

much of the land around it was sold by the defence department in the early to mid 1980s. what's there now industrial estates or something right?

Asides from the present Magyar Barrack military area, there is also a Safeway Distribution Centre, and I assume numerous industrial warehouses etc.

None of the land upon which the former siding sat is currently part of the military base.

The industrial Section is on the Eastern side of the Army Camp, The western side (which is where broadstore is) has just been sold to GROCON, which means more industrial area.
I wonder if they'll end up putting a Siding back through there but make it SG or better still connect it via a siding from the Upfield line

See here and here for how the line appeared on Melway edition 1.

(I also note that they incorrectly showed the former Cambpellfield station!)

Was it supposed to be south of Camp Road?

Campbellfield was incorrect because it closed in 1956 - ten years before Melway edition 1 was published.

That's what I was referring to.  The location was correct.

Thanks for all your responses, Campebellfield Station has actually been proposed again, in the same spot as the old station.
I am wondering could there be any chance of old Rollingstock inside the army camp?
