Just quoting him,I'm not quite sure of his roll in QR, the bit about paying insurance was in jest.

Drivers/crew, 3 definately board the train at Emerald so I can confirm that.

WOW I loved that photo -the orginal livery was great Very Happy

What was the accommodation like in the TLV van? I am assuming that it wouldn't be luxurious like a 'lander carriage. Curiosity killed a cat, but in this case it is tormenting a gunzel... I would really have liked to have 'done' the trip.

Before it was cut, the Dirranbandi mixed had a JCS (I think) sleeper, than after that went a TLV (I think again!) could be attached on request. Did the Yaraka mixed ever have sleeping accommodation?

<blink> y'know, I never actually thought to take any photos of the *inside* of any of the vans I was in... there is a plan of the TLV in the images section of Railpage.

Couple of notes I made: (During my days as a ticket clerk, I must have wondering how I could market these things...)
1. Ceiling mounted fan in passengers compartment .
2. Seats 6 people in passenger compartment and 9 in crew compartment.
3. Seats may be folded up to provide bunks for 4 people in passenger compt. and 6 people in crew compartment.
4. Gas burner in Guards compartment is accessable to other passengers.

The guards & goods compartment was inaccessable to the passenger & spare crew compartments. (No doubt because this was a van specifically designed for passengers - the "L" in the classification indicates a Sitter, similar to BL, MBL, LAL etc.).
There was a hole in the wall which you could reach through and use the gas burner. In later years they removed the gas cylinders on mixed trains (the story I heard was that some fool let the gas drain on one trip, don't know how true that was.)

The seats were bench style, with vinyl coverings, so they were quite comfortable. If you were lucky enough to get the entire van to yourself, it could be quite a good trip...

I believe so, but that would have been well before my time.

When I was growing up, I often looked at the previous generations trips around Queensland (especially in the 60's, when branchlines and Red Railmotors were still plentiful) with undisguised envy, and thought that journeys like mine were a very pale comparison to the good 'ol days.

I never actually thought the day would happen, that someone would look at my trips with the same envy Shocked

My advice? Do whatever you can.... One day, someone will look at *your* gunzelling, and say "Gee, I wish I had 'done' that"...

I don't think it would be a case of paying insurance (QR's insurance would cover operations on all lines, wouldn't it?), somuch as QR didn't want to provide the service, and there was no community or government will (or need) to coerce QR into continuing it. Standards regarding vehicles conveying passengers may have played a part, too, though it could be difficult to separate the actual regulations from QR's "amplification" of them, to justify their position. Razz

If you wanted to travel the line today, there would probably be two options:

1. Rock up to Emerald on pure speculation, and hope that the crew will turn a blind eye. (And that's only part of the battle won. Emerald crews only take the train to Alpha. An Alpha crew will take the train to Yaraka and back). If everything goes well, no worries. But if anything unforseen happens, expect the organic fertilizer to hit the manual ventilation device, big.time.

2. If you can get a watertight you-can't-sue-QR-no-matter-what-happens waiver (if such a thing exists) you *may* be able to get away with it. (This is just a hare-brained idea which just came to me, so I have no idea whether this would work or not. Don't blame me...) In any case, the drivers at each depot would still have the unquestionable without-assigning-a-reason-thereto right to refuse your request.

Luck of the draw, really. Pity, it was quite a good trip. Sad

John,
Long way to drive hoping for trip to Yaraka and get told no.

From what I understand they merged the cattle and general goods trains a few years back so the cattle and a loco gets dropped off at Blackall.

Someone in this group about 2 years ago said they wanted to organise a Yaraka trip and was asking for numbers. Not sure where that went but I didn't hear a trip being advertised.

Maybe its time to revive this, perhaps we cannot use the TLV, but howmuch would it cost to get a car dropped off by the SOTO at Emerald?

Any takers?

Well nowadays you can't even put a parcel on the mixed, let alone ride on it. The branch is, or has been, closed Rolling Eyes

I daresay some crews will let you ride in the van etc -a few weeks ago I rode in the van of an SX set. 'twas great...
