hi all
just before a few of us head over for a holiday (and to come to some of the train events)
can the NSW people tell us what is the correct way / procedure for taking shots of trains at central
who do we see (station master or security guards)
and any other useful information
**and yes, i did a search, but there is no information from the last few weeks, just want to make sure nothing new has come in**

Certainly pop into the Station Master's office first to let them know ... done so a couple of times, and had no problems ...
Must get down there again soon with the camera.

I have never ever asked to take photos at central.... and i have never had a problem with anyone. I dont see why you would need to ask anyway.
All opinions expressed by me are mine only...
Caution Horn broken.... watch for finger.

Just take your photos. It is not a crime in Australia to take photos of trains anywhere whatsoever (apart from on restricted military sites, none of which exist anymore); if anyone asks you, ask them to show you the relevant legislation. You should be fine.

The only reason Biqua asks is it's common courtesy. he just wants to let someone know he's there. and just (an excuse to get any special train movements)

Advise the SM's office that you will be taking photos. But if some over officious person tells you that you can't, calmly and politely advise that you are not asking their permission because you don't need it.
jrobbo: You cannot take photos of any defence installation without permission of the base commanding officer. See section 82 of the Defence Act.

I know that... I was just remarking that there aren't any military sites anymore with working trains on them.

That's right courtesy, and then if someone comes up to you later to tell you off, you can politely tell them to bugger off.

Ask before you take photos and you have no problems!
Except for that chap down at Redfern. i ASKED him before i took the photos if I could!!
"you cannot take photos, it is against the laws!" he said.
me: "ok mate...no problem"
2 minutes later, M17 arrives and I take more photos!
He was the only person to challange me on my holidays. 99% of them dont mind if you ask before hand. The bloke at Circular Quay was quite a friendly person when I asked him and said how he appricated me asking first.

You do not need to ask. It is common courtesy to let them know what you will be doing so they don't misunderstand, but you do not need their permission.

I think that the SM at Central has more to do than worry about people taking photos of trains. Don't bother him and stay in the legal areas.

If you look sufficiently nerdy, they'll leave you alone. Anoraks are your friend.
In my case this is not an option, because I am so hip, ultra-cool, and have the cold, piercing blue eyes of a Russian spy as I smoke Camels hands-free in my Marlon Brando jacket..... **shaddup TLD™** as I was saying, in my case, I just take a small boy with me, my eight year-old stepson. Take a kid with you, and you instantly become Zero Threat to anybody. I've taken photos all over Central with the young bloke, and have never even been aproached by any rail personnel, let alone spoken to.

Don't bother asking, heaps of tourists around, but just in case you are thinking of taking pictures in the underground, don't use a flash on your camera as the train is coming in for it will temporarily blind the driver.
This will get you removed from the premises and cause delays while the driver waits till he gets his sight back to determine how far he has overshot the platform!!
