I don't have a problem. I am paid to take photos for our region as part of my job! Laughing

And as for Central, I didn't have a problem there either even though I tried to!! Twisted Evil

I had a call this week at work regarding taking photos on stations from the Transport Ministers Office.

Seems a 'buff' was chased off Penrith Station recently and decided to make a complaint!!!

Well, CityRail is apparently working on some "Guidelines" for staff so as to avoid any problems with train buffs and the general public. They admit it is not illegal to take photos on CityRail Property or trains, but the guidelines are needed for Station Masters to know what is and isn't allowed and whats safe.

It may be also available to the public too when completed.

Do you know if this "buff" had a papparazzi lens or a compact ?

If/When this is completed - how is it going to work - eg would it be sent to appropiate staff as a circular or breif the relevant staff or would they slip it into the rules and it would only be noticed if someone goes to look upt the rules ?

What I am getting at is can we customers/travellers/gunzels assume that those who need to know will be told about those "guidelines" ?

As the staying goes the staff are the last to know

Its possbile that even if such "guidelines"/rules are introduced there would be someone/s who would try to stop someone taking pictures.

I rarely go on a choo choo these days and it was my paranoia that resulted from reading the various threads here and elsewhere about people having problems taking pics that stopped me taking fotos the times I had my cam with me and not the establishment itself !

I think it was a compact, and I am pretty sure he asked if he could and was told no.

I hope the guidelines get out in the form of General Instructions so that all staff are aware. The person drafting these guidelines said that they hoped to have them on the website if they get accepted so that there is less confusion.

If you want to go and take pictures, I can hook you up via PM with the person I spoke with. They will give you an answer. This person accompanies people filming and taking photos if they can to avoid problems. (non commercial I'm talking about!) They have even been out with a Uni Student who wanted to film something for a thesis and was chased off by TO's. Even when accompanied they tried to chase them off.

As for taking one or 2 photos, they don't stop tourists do they??? But if you set up a tripod (as I did at Circ Quay Wink ) and stand in a dangerous spot of impede access or passengers, that will surely get you moved on.

And then?????? Mwa ha ha ha!

Thanks for your reply

Nar I have a compact (6x optical :p) and I meant taking only a few happy snaps here and there, not stetting up a tripod documenting each brick, sleeper and drain pipe, nothing artsy fartsy.

Rather, I will fill my SD card on the Central Open Day ! Wink

The shot counter on my cam is like up to 1500 now to something and the only trains I've shot so far is a half dodgy video of rotten row at the Eveleigh Car Sheds and two shots of central at night one out of focus and another under exposed !

As for stopping tourists, given what you have just descripted, would it suprise you if they did ?
I am paranoid someone will notice the flash or get annoyed at it

I only travel say once or twice a month and the only time recently where I saw someone take a picture at a station was my own local station where while waiting for a City bound R/S to stop at the platform, one of a group of youngins who didnt fit in to the normal crowd at the station whipped out a digital and took a picture of the front of the train ! I was suprised I said to my self wtf he must be an e-gunzel. I mean who fotos an ordinary R/S set Rolling Eyes

Otherwise it seems hardly anyone sticks around at Circular Quay and its not like theres any trains or heritage left at Central to fotograph any.

I was commuting from/to Strathfield every day for 5 years (99-03) and practically saw all the morning/evening XPT/Xplorers every day and apart from rare occasion of noticing gunzels setting up tripods at the platform ends I can honestly say I never a tourist or traveller take a picture of the XPT/Xplorer or take a picture of a friend/relative boarding. The only time I can remeber of fotos being taken was early afternoon with no train in sight and that was a family or friend shot for whatever reason.

I can't even recall anyone else waiting for or photographing the Broken Hill 'Express' or the IP/Ghan (at Strathfield)

Having to commute to Uni allowed me to do alot of gunzeling at the same time, pity I never had a camera with me.

Some of the ones you don't expect to take pics of trains could be so called (by themselves) artistes....

They love to photograph their grafitti...
Thats part of the reason TO's look out for young people taking photos of trains and infrastructure.

In my 8 weeks in Sydney I was not questioned at all about taking photo's. I even stood next to TO's and took photo's.I had planned to go to Strathfield to get some photo's of the IP, but had to cancel that weekend to return to Darwin. Only once I asked if it was OK to take photo's. I filled out a form and was on my way. When I got home I discovered I had been given a permit to take photo's on city rail and state rail property in all public access areas as long as I could present a valid ticket for travel. I can also sell the photo's for profit.

Nothing has come out on the intranet as yet.
I have always found that central can be a funny place to take photo's even before getting onto the job but at times it does help to wear a uniform.
In other places you dont need to worry about staff as long as you stay behind that yellow line and dont put your self in the way of people.

Fair enough but in this instance I am pretty sure the train was clean !

I think they either were from out of town or were gunzel/s and took pic of R/S cause soon to be withdrawn. Even if graffiti how would they know what Car would be on what set and when, unless they were gunzels or had connections .

Yeah I agree - in these situations it helps to not look or act shifty as they would be more likely to pick on you if appear shifty or are shifty

Theres a video floating around the net from Chasers where they did an experiment with photography and security
Sorry I dont have the link I'll find it again one day

What they did was dress a guy up as a stereotypical out of town tourist with the bucket hat and shorts and such and sent him on the harbour bridge walkway with a camera.

The aim was to see how long he could take pictures of the bridge and of the security cameras before being detected and approached.

They show him take photos of the bridge with passers by not sayiing a thing or even noticing, even when the tourist pokes his camera into a surveliance camera dome. No security guard comes running.

Next, they dressed a guy as a stereotypical arab with in white with head dress and sent him onto the bridge and he the same actions. Passers by noticed and even took second looks at him. He did not take pictures of the dome but a security guard in disco jacket and beanie was dispatched very promptly.

the clip was quite short, but im not sure if the whole thing was a joke or it was real

I 'go by rail' when I attend trade shows/expos on a regular basis and business related events and as I said earlier I commuted a fair bit in the past when I used to go to uni, and foruntly I never had any run ins with rentacops or grey ghosts.

When commuting to uni there were a few close calls where I didnt have a ticket on me cause the booth/machine at the boarding station was either closed or didnt take concessions or I decided to change destination ( On occasion I would buy ticket to parramatta but sometimes go to rydalmere instead, depening on how late the train was or if i missed the connection)

Foruntly I never had any any run ins with the grey ghosts to this day

Now, this brings me with my runin with the rentacops, and ties in to the above 'look the part' excuse that rentacops or grey ghosts may use or assume on photographers or anyone generally

A few years ago I decide to go to the camera expo and because it was a public event I decided not to wear the usual suit and such which I sometimes do. So I went in hooded top, jeans and too a backpack and didnt go along with an associate. The orangisers didnt issue ID tags for this particular event.

Anyway, at the sony stand I noticed something intresting to me, They a few DVDRW drives intenral and external that i found interesting at the time, they were not avalible in AUS at the time or something I do not remeber , waited ages for a rep to waited even more while they went and found the right rep to talk to me ,chatted to the rep about it and other issues for at least 15-20mins.

Went back to have a final look at the units to follow up on what I discussed and take to notes , They had a few models including an external model which was connected to a laptop for people to look at and fiddle with accompained by the usual printed propaganda and informative displays describing what it is, how it works etc

Neither item was therethered to the display with a kensington lock. Not my problem and none of my business. Sony's stand was quite large, open and had many staffs. Anyway I examine the last unit I was interested in, Read the spec label on the underside of the drive and such. I go to try it, didnt work, wasnt configured or something. Look at it again check the cables and such. So I gave up on it as I had already gotten the information I needed and was about to turn around and walk away, and before I was able to do that I hear a odd voice saying to me behind me :

"Just tell me one thing..."

I thought it was another Sony staffer who noticed me or another visitor who noticed that I might know about it and such but turns out to be wog security guard with a gold tooth (im a wog so please dont jump to conculsions here)

and he continues

"tell me why were you continuously turning it over and such" words to that affect

I go to him in words of the effect of
"Im was looking at it thats what they put it here for , infact i was just talking to the rep about it"

Then he goes in a smeghead voice

"We have had complaints"

I go

"Complaints ? About what ? From who? Sony? I was just over there talking to them about it minuts ago Why would they complain about something they setup"

I then continued on about how I was in the industry and I was talking to their marketing manager about it and I gave him my card and the look on his face was priceless, his eyes basically opened up and he was reading the card out and he seemed very suprised, hands me the card back and starts apologising and such

I didnt care for it so turn around quickly and move on and he does it again to me, taps me on the back and says to me "hey, dont worry about it" That did it ... It was late in the day had other things to do at the event otherwise I would have reported him and or left I was that furious.

If he had said polietly and nicely Excuse me and so on, I wouldnt have minded at all, but I had no idea how long he was standing behind me.

Heck even noone from the stand intervended.

He probably saw my backpack and way I was dressed and assumed I was going to pinch something.

Anyway, my experience relates to the thread and issue of photography. Sorry but I am lousy at summarising experiencies.

You thought RailCorp was bad.

Try dealing with SEPTA (South-East Pennsylvania Transport Authority - Local Philadelphia train operator) and MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority - Boston) in the 'States! Confused

With SEPTA, I have to submit a written application to the Media Relations Director at SEPTA, what I want to photograph, when I want to photograph, why I want to photograph, and if approved, I have to see her myself in the big SEPTA office, show ID, be interviewed in person, and it'll be then that I get a "Photo Release" form giving me permission to do so.

Ditto for MBTA, except MBTA takes longer!

In saying this, I am in a foreign country, and it would be wise to respect the regulations here Razz

That process has been pretty much standard for many decades for any large company or utility with sensisitive infrastructure or products/servers, except that it is generally only relevant to professional or broadcast media

http://www.bnsf.com/media/news/articles/2006/06/2006-06-07a.html

^^ That's BNSF's foamer pass. Wether you interpret it as a foamer pass or a foamer tracking device depends on ones opinion.

Anyone at Central last Saturday evening would have seen the Moree tagged Explorer.

As it sat in platform 1 prior to departure I counted no less than 4 TO's taking pics of the ARTWORK. Mutual admiration society ??????
