There was talk a few years back of building a major container freight transfer facility in Queanbeyan yard, but it got squashed by a local MP who said there would be too much heavy traffic on Henderson Rd.(His mum must live there Wink )
Out of curiosity, does anyone know what happened to the cement traffic which has been gone for quite some time now?

I don't know about wether Canberra would have a different level of service without the border, but I'd say the major reason the container terminal never got off the ground is to do with the lack of industry. There just isn't enough demand to justify the investment required. Even CR/AN couldn't get one off the ground, and theyeven went to the trouble of setting the yard up.

The only way something like that would work is if 1 company had a requirement for at least 12 boxes at a time on a change over basis (12 in 12 out). If there was demand like this then others would probably use the srevice, but without the initial demand it just doesnt work.
