The forums are great, but let’s face it – for finding factual and up-to-date information in a hurry you’d have a better time getting drunk and hallucinating it. Sorta. That’s why this year we’re putting in our very own Wiki for all things Rail. Not only that, but search is getting a massive, massive overhaul. Seriously, you’d just about find Alibrandi with this thing. Our formula here is simple; keep the ultra-newbies from being ultra-newbies for too long by giving them some bedtime reading, and make search provide same-day service. |
And not before time. "Search is your friend" is a cliche on Railpage Australia™ but in many cases, it isn't. Mind you, I don't have a problem getting drunk and hallunicating it. Someone has to give Mr Drunkhill a run for his money and I am more than up to the task.
Seriously, I can't wait to see the end result.
This message will self destruct in 10 seconds. Good luck, Jim.

I'd like to see a little bar in the corner, with a good looking barperson serving expensive cocktails, while a piano player tinkles away at his grand piano.
Failing that, an expresso machie with a never ending supply of fresh ground coffee would be nice!

The first tweak has already been made - the code for posting a message in the forums has been tweaked. See if it makes posting quicker!

Personally, I would be happy for Armchair Operators to be moved into the "paying members only" section, if and when that eventuates. That would limit the contributors somewhat - hopefully to the Clued Ones.

Yeahhh maaaaaybe. I'm not sure. I think, given that the moderators are also members (hehehe oo-er guv'nor), they can be adequately protected under the current terms and conditions. An abusive PM, for example, is an abusive PM regardless of who receives it. | True, but I'm talking moreso in terms of protecting against
"You know you shouldn't have written 'smeg RTM' in your signature, can you please remove it?"
"No way, I dont have to listen to you, your record is shaky. If you're not careful I'll dob you in to the other moderators!"
(Happened to another moderator today) |
When I was running another board, I instituted a rule (which didn't always get followed I must admit, but it was a good rule) that the moderators ALWAYS present a unified front. That is, if a mod made a dodgy call we might discuss it in the admin forum and maybe convince that mod to retract it or what-have-you, but the punters NEVER knew about that, and if we couldn't resolve it in the admin forum, then the original position taken by that mod would be backed up 100% by the rest of the team (in public at least). This effectively nixed the notion that you could play off one mod against another when the punters saw that it wouldn't work (and might give them another warning).
'slave, the reason I'm dubious about special mod protection rules is simply that its another new rule at a time when you're trying to streamline the rule set. You can achieve the result you desire simply by enforcing the current rules stringently when a mod is attacked where you might let it ride if the attack was against a normal member. A few examples of this sends the message that you don't backchat whilst keeping the rules simple.

Yep, that's basically my view of the world also - I don't neccesarily think we need new rules to do it per se.

Personally I'd enjoy a discussion board that is specifically dedicated to Railway Media. This would encompass literature (books, magazines), DVD's, Television production, etc, that are concerned with railroads.
Sure, one can always introduce these topics in the 'General' board, however I strongly believe that given the widespread interest and discussion, railway media deserves its own board.
Ideally, the rotting corpse that is called Armchair Operators could be laid to rest thus creating an opening for a new board.

I am in 100% agreement with you there, The LoadedDog.
I was a Cub Scout Leader for over 13 years, 10 of those as 'Akela' or cub leader-in-charge, and I always ran the section as a unified leadership. Always. Whatever decision we made, the assistants and myself, either singularly, or as a team, we would always back each other up if things [rarely] backfired. And if it was a result of poor decision making, we would talk about how to better that fault, the next time it happened. I would NEVER permit leaders to argue between themselves or with me in public-rather encouraging discussion after the pack meeting had closed and the kids went home.
A saying that I applied to my work as a Cub leader, and as union shop steward, and that fits in perfectly with forum moderatorship, an old union saying applies perfectly:
United, we stand; divided, we fall.

I think a massive forum rationalisation is warranted generally.

Yes, it is good to have somewhere to throw all the odd bits, but should it be regulated or changed ?

This is a good suggestion, if it does not make too much work on the backend. Perhaps some css tweaks?
I also like the suggestion of a railway media forum. Print, audio, Mags, AV and You Tube and so forth. It could be filled quickly and be used quite a lot, I would say. We are in the middle of the information revolution here.
All in all, good suggestions. United Mods and a united policy is good, but I feel we need more visual evidence of mods at work in the threads.
'nuff said.

An overhaul of how each forum room could be looked at, e.g NSW could be Tuscan and Chrome yellow, Victoria VR blue and gold...You could even allow the members to vote on what livery to use on each state - NSW: tuscan or Candy...Vic: VR blue and gold or V/line orange and grey etc. I am more than happy to help you design any motifs to be used. PM me if interested.

I would like to see Armchair Operators go too. It's a waste of space, if done properly from the start as mjja suggests, it may have been bearable-even entertaining.
I also agree that some of the leeser used forums should get the flick too.
Cheers
