Hi,

I thought this sticky might be useful to people like me, who don't know how to do MSTS modelling Embarassed . This will hopefully become a thread for hints, tips, help, and a sharing of ideas. If I knew how to do 3D modelling I would payback what I owe hopefully with new models.
Please reply and keep it going,

An enormous volume of hints, tips, tutorials and explanations have been posted here and on other websites (Steam4me is a great resource for tutorials), so we generally prefer it if people use the Search function instead Smile

Er, what exactly is your question here?

And what a brilliant idea.
If we did have such a section divided up into sub threads i'm sure the experts over the pond start coming here as they have done before on important issues.
I for one am all for it.
It's amazing really, here we have the best resource of tutorials on steam4me
in the world, yet the forum has nothing in this regard.
All those in favour say eye.

I take it that you are in favour Alltrains?

No, I'm in favour, the more information that is available for us newby builders the better. I know there is steam4Me and other threads on this site, but there are a lot of pages on this site to search through to get the correct information from those like yourself and the rest of the team-alco and the other experienced builders. I think it would be better if all that information is available on one thread, it would make it easier to find.
One thing I would never do is have a cheap shot at anyones problems as I am not perfect either.

I know it would have been tongue in cheek anyway mate.

Well, looks like I'm in a minority. I only request that people use this as an index of tips, not a discussion thread about them as it will clutter an otherwise invaluable tool.

Hey Michael,
Go for it.
Throw it around - get some discussion going, understand the need and what is the best solution to get it right first time. I see Railpage listening to the users a great step forward and as I said in my other post, I am anticipating a great year of going forward. Good onyer.
You also said you would look at one of my suggestions - any advance on it?
Happy New Year mate.

Hey,  Exclamation

Well, let's get this thread on the road! For the benefit of all who should abandon hope on other threads and stickies in Railpage Austrailia(TM),
what do you need, and how do you create 3D models of locomotives, steam and diesel? Question

I hope this sticky is useful by the way to all the other newbies like me! Embarassed

I will be reading;

"ic6594"

Visit "Model Design, Construction and Modification" Section at the Tutorials Page at the Steam4me site - there's over 35 tutorials on that very subject.

As for general hints & tips, there's about 50 already at Hints and Tips at the Steam4me site.

Hi Yuri welcome back,
I believe what ic6594 is after isn't so much as the tutorials but the help when something goes amiss in the building of the model and it is not covered in the tutorials. As an example, I have a copy of Michael Vone's "Guide To Building Routes" and followed the instructions on building "First Route" through to page 177 where you can change the terrain textures. I followed the instructions in the book but it did not work. I have followed the instruction from the first page word for word so I would need help from others to overcome this situation that is not covered in any tutorials and I feel that this is going to be a good forum for this type of help as it will be all in one place and not spread through out the whole MSTS forums
Cheers

Is anyone actually going to post something that will benefit newcomers, or just bicker about the politics of it. Obviously the thread has been accepted so let's utilise it

I'll have a question myself about route building in the next day or two.

Well ARG706 look at the post that I replied to Yuri. I still have not worked out how to solve the problem that I used as an example

bicker - 1.  To engage in a petty, bad-tempered quarrel; squabble.

Who's bickering?

you can change the terrain textures. I followed the instructions in the book but it did not work

G'day Russell.

This is an area I found the MSTS RE Help Menu "Working with Texture Patches" to be very adequate in explaining what to do.

Assuming you've set the initial terrain patch as described by Jim Ward in An Idiot's Guide To Extracting a New Route, you then select and place textures as per this tutorial: Selecting and Placing Textures.

Thanks Yuri
I will try that and see what happens.
This is where this sticky is going to be good because I used Michael Vone's book and the problem existed but now I have been given the help to solve the problem.
While we are waiting for others here is another one for the brain to work on, I think it is to do with the Great White Void.
In Michael's book on page 29 & 30 it goes into merging multiple regions and it explains how to do it.
It said that this is easily done in the RGE. First you create the tiles that exist in one region, just as described above (as normal) until and including the step that tells you to Toggle Populated State. Then you go back to an earlier map that shows the missing region (or regions), and zoom into the next region, likewise creating tiles in that region. Repeat this again if you need a third region, etc. Now you can click Edit, then click Minimize quad-tree, and continue as before.
I found that if I did as it said I would end up with either the tile of one region or the tiles of the other region but not both.
So if this is the case and it is that easy to cross the great white void then why didn't Russell use it in the building of The Great Southern Rail and Allan use it in the Adelaide and the Hills?
Cheers everyone
Happy thinking

The first time I encountered the GWV was the horizontal line that ran through the Willunga line and the Victor Harbour line. It only occurred when travelling north and the usual escape applied. However, I was not comfortable about releasing a route with a GWV in it, so I moved the route north, well clear of the GWV even if I went to Tailem Bend sometime in the future. Heh, heh, heh. Of course as history shows, I went further than Tailem Bend and encountered two, yes two GWV lines - the old horizontal line plus a route ending vertical line at the SA/Vic border. The vertical line would not permit me to place anything beyond it and since RGE would not add any tiles beyond it I faced ending the route at Cannawigara (where? heh).
I threw it to Mike Simpson who was also unable to solve the problem.
He in turn threw it to Carl-Heinz, who worked through Route Riter, solved a problem with it and released an update to RR. Then we were able to move the route 64 tiles north and west. We tried merging routes but because RGE would not attach tiles to the east of the vertical line, it also would not permit us to merge routes.
Sorry to be so long winded, but this nearly ended the route and I guess this information will be of use to any one else who may face the same problem.
cheers
allanl
