so what is this thing for?

Thanks! Umm, I'm not sure what it's for. I don't have a lot of experience in modelling environments (i.e. a complete 360-degree thing that surrounds the camera), I've only made simple models of an object before. So I thought I'd have a go at it. I was looking at the interior of a Millenium Train as a model, but the curves were too complex. Also, I haven't been on Millenium Trains often enough to have a personal idea of how the train looks. So I chose a Tangara, the lines are simpler and more geometric, and I can fill in the blanks from memory. So I downloaded a bunch of photographs of Tangara interiors and grabbed the floorplan of the carriage from www.cityrail.info and got started.

That is absolutley amazing. I have never seen anything like it.
What program did you use to make it and how long did it take?

Thanks also! I made it using Strata 3D CX. It's taken eight to ten hours, I suppose, over four days. It would have been shorter, but I can never decide which level of realism to aim for. It's not complete yet, so it'll be longer in the finish. Smile

Added:
- Handrail going downstairs.
- The no smoking/guard's compartment/help/police/feet on seats sticker above the stairs.
- Carriage number, which is neither accurate nor researched.
- Bolts on the clamps connecting the vertical poles to the panels at the end of the vestibule seats. If you squint you can just see them.
- The strip across the ceiling between the vertical poles in the vestibule.
- The small panel next to the doors with the "Keep hands clear of door" sticker on it.

Fixed:
- The network maps are now the maps you'll actually see on the trains. However, the style of the sticker above the carriage number and the style of the network map stickers aren't the same. The one over the stairwell has been updated in most of the trains that now have yellow doors - among other things, the signs are re-worded so they can't be vandalised into amusing variations instead, now. I couldn't find adequate photos of the new signs, so I used the old one instead.

Still to be fixed:
- The emergency help point is missing from the panel alongside the left hand doors. I haven't been able to find a decent photo of the help point (or more importantly the stickers on it), so I've left it out, for now.
- There's a visible line down the centre of the ceiling that shouldn't be there. I keep forgetting to fix it.
- The cone-shaped mountings for the poles and hand-holds should have bolt holes in them, but I've not been bothered so far.
- The grilled panel in the ceiling is not accurate.

Sorry to burden everyone with tedious details, but this thread is kind of a list of notes for me to fix things as well. Smile[/img]

Just a random thought...they don't usually have the network map on both sides of the carriage, do they? Isn't one wall usually blank? I can't remember. Smile

Some are blank, but most I've seen have the government's "untangling the network" poster thing with the colourful lines (reminiscent of ribbons).

I've added the emergency help intercom and a few minor details, and I think I'm happy with it. I left the two network maps, because I couldn't find a decent high-resolution picture of the government poster and it looked poor with a blank panel there.

Here's the image as a wallpaper for anyone who wants to download it!

Preview image:

800 x 600 wallpaper
1024 x 768 wallpaper
1680 x 1050 wallpaper

I snuck a little plug for Railpage Australia™.com.au into the bottom of the image. Very Happy

Enjoy! Very Happy

I wont...every set will have to be personalised...

For example by that stage realism will be the top priority so every week you will have to download a new version of something just to make sure it is exactly how it running at that time.

Could you imagine having the whole Cityrail Network or worse ALL of Australia in one route with EVERY single train running EXACTLY the same as the trains in real life, all setup via internet...You driving one train around everywhere having to fit in within the Cityrail Schedule... Rolling Eyes

It would be impossible...Imagine watching a train get painted in-game as paint goes on in real life it goes on in game Rolling Eyes

Laughing Imagine that....crazy...just crazy...
