Now let's hope to see a 86 class back to original livery one day.

i just picked up the latest edition of Motive Power magazine and it features an article on the scrapping of the 85/86 class. according to the article the following locomotives have been saved from the scrap metal merchants. to join the existing pair of 86 class units already saved.
8501 SETS
8507 DSRM
8601 DSRM (serviceable)
8609 private owner listed as M.Gaut
8644 SETS (serviceable)
8650 DSRM
8622 was listed as being at eveleigh at the time of the articles writing.
hope this helps
Cheers

Have all the other locos now been scrapped? Does 8619 still exist?

That's great, another five added, I happy with that, good to see a 8501 is also now preserved. Now some of NSW electric loco history to be preserved for now and future generations. This now brings the total to seven.
So looks like TRMS missed out, as I did hear along the grape vine that they were interested in one.

8619 was being converted to a crew car but it was mentioned in the article work on that project had stopped. with the exception of those mentioned all the remainder of the 85/86 class have been turned into scrap metal.
someone may know what became of 8622 as its fate was uncertain.
cheers

Look, I know that KJ can do what he likes with his money, but to have two electric locos at D, hundreds of K's from the 1500DC, seems pretty futile. But then I suppose they have just as good a chance of eventually running as anything else up there.

Remember that he also has a 46 class as well.
I feel kind of the same way, but at least he went and saved an 85 class. To me an 85 class on display is better then all having been scrapped, and SET's has 8501 on the way so that could be returned to working order one day. I am pleased that two 85's are staying with us after the rest are all cut up.

If you wanted to use them for FREIGHT haulage it might be a bit difficult as certain electrified parts of the freight network have been de-wired or de energized within the last few years.
There are u-boats there too.

No, wasn't really thinking of using them for freight, but rather having them in a museum or other site where, if they are in working order, they have access to overhead power.

I think 'was planned to be converted to a crew car'...would be a more accurate description. I don't think they ever go very far with it other than a high speed run up to Coonamia.
8619 was still within the Islington Works area a fortnight ago.
