For years the ACT Government has been trying to promote an intermodal service to a new container terminal to be built at Hume. They tried to talk FreightCorp into it but everything got put on hold until after privatisation. Then PN lost the fuel contract to FA and they broke off all further discussions.
I'm sure FA would haul containers if there were any offering.
Cheers
David

Are there no existing facilities at Canberra for Intermodel?

Nothing specific. You could load them at the same place they loaded the logs, but it's not really built for it. That whole area west of the Monaro Highway is to be redeveloped for housing over the next 4 years (I don't even know if the ARHS museum is safe) so it would be better to build something new at Hume.

I understand from the map I have here that Hume appears to be located in NSW and not the ACT.

Hume is on the ACT side of the border. It's between the Monaro Hwy and the border around the intersection with Lanyon Drive.

Are you suggesting the the line within the ACT as it currently exists will be removed?

I hope not. But there is a pretty good chance that most of the goods yard would be removed.

I don't want to sound to negative, but I can't see the need for an intermodal freight terminal in Canberra. There isn't enough traffic.
Really to develop a terminal in somewhere like Canberra (it's only about 3-4 hours to get a container from Sydney, and it would take almost that amount of time to put it on a train in Sydney) you need one or two heavy users to justify the initial investment. Canberra doesn't have any receivers or consignors of any size, other than fuel companies.
