Any work on the extn during the week, or this weekend? When is the next big effort due?

No works this weekend, as anymore track laying would impede the Anzac Day March.

Is there still some pointwork missing on the Tram Extension Project?

Not that i know....there are still pointwork to be instaled in Victoria Sqaure and at South Tce. but the project hasnt reached those areas yet.

What points are going at Vic square, I thought it was just going straight through? I was aware of a new siding at South Tce that will require some pointwork.
Also whats this I hear about decorative pavers, isn't the concrete too high to allow pavers to now be laid centre track, you know with sand underneath ect?

Pavers will be installed in between and at the edges of the tracks except where cars will driver cross the tracks. They will be using Boral Concrete Pavers in a Charcoal Colour, with these pavers in a 90* Herringbone Patten. Where the power poles are installed there will be a strip of Concrete going from curbside to curbside across the tracks using "Brighton Lite" Concrete. On the platforms slate will be used as paving.
Crossovers that are to be installed are 1. the South Side of Victoria Square just before the platforms, 2. In the section of track between Grenfell St. and Rundle Mall. 3. South Tce. sideing.

Ahh, I see, thanks for that. What is "Brighton Lite" concrete, and why are they putting a strip accross the tracks, just for the visual, or is there a purpose to it. In my head I sort of think it would look better without it, but perhaps the strip would serve the same purpose as the freese in kitchen tiling?

Well the strips across the tracks are only where the power poles will go.. so im not too sure for the reasoning. "Brighton Lite" concrete is the type of concrete they already use for exsisting gutters and medium strip on King William St.
TransportSA has update the page with information on King William Street. Looks like they are gearing up to do King William Street sooner then later.
The following changes will take place on King William Street from Friday, 4 May 2007:
Safety barriers will be installed along the tramline corridor to create a safe working area for contractors. The two centre traffic lanes (one lane in each direction) will no longer be available for use by motorists and speed restrictions will apply. The current peak-hour ban on right turn movements from King William Street will be extended to 24 hours a day. This ban will affect the intersections of Pirie and Waymouth streets, Currie and Grenfell streets and for southbound motorists travelling along Hindley and Franklin streets. Turning left from King William Street into Waymouth Street will continue to be temporarily banned, between 7 am and 7 pm, while the kerbside lane in King William Street is occupied by a private construction company working on the City Central project. Please refer to map above for details of these restrictions.
During this time, suggested alternative routes for motorists turning right off King William Street are Pultney or Morphett streets. Motorists who do not need to access the CBD can use alternative ring routes such as Robe Terrace, Fullarton Road, Greenhill Road and Port Road etc.
The preliminary works involve removal of the median and flagpoles, plus installation of new electrical conduits. The median strip will be reinstated including replacement of the garden beds following the construction works.
The project claims King William Street and North Terrace as road corridors where priority will be given to public transport.
Flyer about the work: http://www.transportsa.com.au/tramexten ... 300407.pdf
Just dug up some more info off the TransportSA site. Looks like they will not be adding the curve from King William Street to North Terrace until the June long weekend but they will be doing ALL of King William Street in one move. I have heard rumours of doing King William Street in 2 sections but if this is anything to go by, they are going to be doing an almost super human effort. You have all seen how fast North Terrace was done, just imagine KWS!
The next stage of major construction works will involve track construction in King William Street, which is scheduled for the weekend of 18 May 2007.
The curved track at the King William Street and North Terrace intersection will be installed on the June long weekend, which will require the full closure of this intersection. Resurfacing of the road pavements in North Terrace and King William Street will also be scheduled over the next few weeks after the tram tracks have been installed.
The major track works in Victoria Square will be undertaken over a weekend in July 2007.
The major track works in King William Street will take place in a similar way to the first two stages on North Terrace with King William Street closed to through traffic during the construction weekends. During these works, one lane in each direction will be available for motorists to access local businesses.
Further details of these major construction works will be provided at a later date.
Changes to bus stops and taxi rank facilities
Following the major construction works on North Terrace the following bus stops and taxi ranks have been relocated to accommodate the new tram tracks.
Bus stop X1 on the southern side of North Terrace adjacent to the UniSA City West campus will be moved approximately 20 metres to the west, resulting in a loss of the permit parking zone on the southern side for up to three cars. Bus stop C1 on the northern side of North Terrace adjacent to the City Skate Park will be moved approximately 20 metres to the west, resulting in the loss of some car parking on the northern side (approximately seven cars). Bus stop W2 on the southern side adjacent to the EDS building will remain unchanged, however some services from other stops on North Terrace will be moved here. Refer to the stage 2 bus stop and taxi rank relocations. The taxi rank on the northern side adjacent to the Convention Centre will be reduced from 10 taxis to three taxis, subject to final design of the Victoria Street junction traffic signals. The part-time taxi rank/bus stop (D) on the northern side adjacent to the Hyatt Hotel will remain unchanged (i.e. a bus stop from 6 am to 12.30 am and a taxi zone at other times). Bus stop (D3) for city-free buses outside the railway station will be moved several metres to the west to outside SkyCity with a full-time taxi zone for four cars in front of it. These bus stop and taxi zones will be relocated in between two new pedestrian crossings either side of the new platform at the Adelaide Railway Station tram stop. Bus stop W1 on the southern side adjacent to Roma Mitchell House (RMH) will be moved 10 metres to the east between the two new pedestrian crossings. Bus stop V1 for the Port Road buses will remain as is. It is expected that when the trams are running and the Bee Line bus is no longer in operation, buses currently servicing stop V1 will be moved to bus stop W1 adjacent to RMH. It is proposed that the part-time bus stop/taxi zone on the southern side adjacent to the Stamford will remain in the same location until trams start running and the Bee Line bus service stops. Taxis will then use stop V1 which will become a full time taxi zone. The current taxi and bus zone adjacent the Stamford hotel is to be converted to part time passenger loading zone and part time taxi zone but this is still being negotiated with the Adelaide City Council.

The eastern side of the North Western roadway of Victoria Square was fenced off today, presumably in preparation for events from this weekend.
The one tree remains on the tram alignment. Unfortunately it is the best looking tree in the square.
Left turns at Waymouth Street should have been banned months ago. There are a number of factors that cause traffic lock-ups here every morning.

It appears this tree is to be moved rather than removed. Its root ball has been wrapped in hessian and a hole has been provided 20 metres or so away.

All flagpoles along the centre strip of KW Street have just been removed.
(yesterday)Just had a look on the extension this arvo. More concrete barriers have been installed on North Terrace. Went down King William Street and found that the flag poles have now been removed. Victoria Square has also got a tree root bell covered with tarp ready for a move. Timber sleepers have been delivered to Vic Square as well. I do hope that they are not going to be used on the track itself, half of the lot were from the original system with spike holes and plenty of wear and tear. Half were brand new though. Even so, new or not, I hope they are not used on the track through the square if they are going to lay the track in the grass.
(today)Sorry for the delay. Photos from yesterday arvo are now here. Photos from last Sunday on KWS will be coming.
New curb work on North Terrace.
Close up showing the concrete barrier strip and the curb.
Sleepers in Vic Square and also that tree that is going to be shifted.

Pretty quiet today.
King William St was to have barriers in place from 10pm Friday the 4th (much like North Tce) to allow the removal of the median strip and digging of trenches to house feeder conduits and new traffic light control cables.
A friend said that he'd heard on the radio that work had been delayed but I went up anyway before lunch to find all lanes open and no barriers evident.
A semi was delivering straight rail lengths rail in Victoria Square. 409, some of your old sleepers were on the ground for the rails to rest on for the time being.
A large crane was setting up to remove the tree (with root ball for re-location). I had things to do but when I passed an hour or so later the crane's boom was lowered and the tree was still in place

Hi from Melbourne.
It's great to see you all posting updates for us interstate and overseas to view.
Truly wonderful - thanks
I was thinking you could nickname it the ZigZag Tramway ![]()
Oh yeah and the images have been great quality and should be part of history in 100 years or so just like the ones we look at from 100 years back ![]()
Cheers
I second flipperMAN's comments regarding the value of this thread. I felt the same way when taking what were to become archive photos of the last days of the Sydney system 46 years ago. That was a sad period of tramway history - this is a joyous day, when we see commonsense prevailing, even if it is almost 50 years since the last Adelaide street lines closed.
If I may be permitted a slight O/T, why was the layout of Victoria Square changed from the four rectangles to the present diamond shape, and when?

Hi edison, there's some info on the website of local Tv show 'Postcards' regarding the various layouts over the years.

I was going to post some of my shots from today but they are generally similar to what you have posted BillD. My PC has a quirk of having to be shut down and then restarted when I use my photo program (HP Images) so it can work. If not, none of the buttons are usable!
Cheers for filling us in today.

Join the club! Mine just reboots itself.

The ramp truck parked itself in Vic Sq at about 10.45 this morning. Delivery tonight?

"Delivery tonight?"

I heard last night that the remaining points leading to Morphett Rd outside Glengowrie depot will be upgraded during July. Hopefully this will result in the tedious speed limits being lifted.
On this topic, it's interesting to note that the points between Sturt Creek and the platform which were replaced months ago are still themselves heavily speed limited. (Any ideas on this?)
During the the same month (and probably on the same weekend), the track in King William St will be redirected in Victoria Square from the current terminus to the new stop which is yet to be built on the western side.
