I haven't been asked for money for some time though the last time I was asked I regret saying no. When I said no they then began telling me there life story why they need money, so for there troubles and because of my soft heart I ended up giving them $5. Kill Me

Bit of a generalisation there... Try what I suggested, that way you KNOW it isn't going to go on drugs and booze, but you can actually help someone in genuine need.

Or is the real problem that you're a self-centred tight prick, and your generalisation is just a defence againts having to admit it?

Its a trick to make you feel sorry for them. I've seen it many a time.

Once I let this lady outside Flinders Street station spend 10 minutes telling me her life story and how she needed to get home to Torquay, only so I could see her reaction at the end when I said no (I knew it was smeg all along and decided to waste her time)... she flew off the handle she almost had steam coming out of her ears!

It was worth it.

Thats my stance on it too. Anyone can put on an act. I get them all the time on the train asking for any small change.

They can't prove how much money you have in your wallet

Bwana, yours is the tactic I usually take, and I have never had one of them take up my offer. I once offered to buy a guy's ticket to Newcastle for him, but he wasn't interested.

Now here you are just being an argumentative prick yourself, as it is the generalisation that I sometimes make myself. However seeing that I (and you from your own admission) try and catch them out as fraudsters (even if they are not boozers etc), doesn't that make us bigger pricks than mbrowne?

Maybe we are just untrusting and tight-fisted pricks using this tactic to as a defence?

I'll do a bit of quick profiling, and make a snap call based on that, whether I give or not. I NEVER do the "well, if you need a hamburger, let me go and buy you one" routine, as I find it condescending, humiliating, and undignified to both parties.

I also WILL give money for booze - on condition they are upfront about what it's for. If you're sleeping rough and have the shakes, then you've got bigger problems than me, and I'm not going to go and buy you a salad roll, hoping to get nodding looks of approval from passers-by. If all you have in your life is a bottle of brown muscat, then I'll help you out. And if I've got time, and you look interesting, I might sit down with you under a tree for a bit. Giving a few minutes of time and conversation can also be a good thing for a lot of people. Try it.

I don't understand why someone would shun perfectly good social security because of pride, or maybe something else; yet they'll scrounge in a bin for food. Idiots...

Buskers are ok, at least they are providing something!

It's not as easy as that.

There are a lot of people who really do fall through the cracks, even with regard to Social Security. And there are others who are professional beggars making $1000 per week. It is our task to tell them apart.

I agree wholeheartedly with you TLD™, on the notion of spending time with someone who's just plain down. If there's one thing that humanizes all of us, it's our empathetic ability.

The answer to the worlds problems is, perspective.

The latest one who pissed me off was a middle aged guy who came cruising into the downstairs saloon of my carriage at about Birrong or somewhere. I straight away spotted himn as fake by his attitude, and that as I was profiling him, he was profiling us. The guy was a pro. I was the last person facing backwards to the direction of travel, and as he came up from the rear of the car he asked the two first people for money, then looked at me and decided I was too scary (hint: people in need are actually not usually afraid of me). He swung by me without a word and then I turned my head to follow him, and he'd cornered a young Asian girl, who was in the process of going for her purse when I engaged BAD DOG mode: "Oi! You! **** OFF!"

He did, but I was too late, so he ****ed off with her money. I only hope it gave him pause for thought - but probably not.

EDIT: It was his not approaching me that ****ed me off. Had he tried, I'd have said 'No', but would have otherwise left him alone. He was fake. I knew it. He knew that I new it. I knew that he knew... etc...
