KITTY HAWK is the last USN conventional carrier and due to decommission next year, therefore this will probably be the last visit to Sydney for a very long time unless policy changes for the nuclear powered ones.

Previous post notes a visit by the Big E - a long time ago - which remained at anchor in the stream/harbour. Although KITTY HAWK has berthed near where the old MELBOURNE berthed, it is considerably longer. The berth was extended in the mid 80s when the Navy took over the old commercial berths on the eastern side of Wolloomooloo Bay and rebuilt all the wharf frontage and the car park.

PS - lucky enough to have spent 3+ weeks embarked in USS INDEPENDENCE in mid 90s and have done a flight/catapult/trap in an S3 Viking right front seat. Great fun!!!!

I watched it leave at lunchtime today - wandered down to have a look and the tugs pulled up, so thought I better hang around:

Kittyhawk is the only one I've not seen. I've seen Connie twice - it's pretty big. But they all seem a bit small once you've seen a giant like Queen Mary 2. Shocked

So you've seen the Saratoga, Essex, Forrestal, Ranger, JFK, Coral Sea, etc etc??
Or do you mean you have seen every carrier in the last few years?

And although the QM2 is big, it is about the same displacement as a non-nuke aircraft carrier. It does sit alot higher though which makes it seem 'bigger'.

If JH wins the next election he may possibly change the law to allow nuke carriers in.

When was this? Before the current law forbidding nuke ships was enacted?

Indeed, landing a plane on a carrier is 1 of the most difficult things a human can do, so much happens in so little time with so many opurtunities for death. I would pay good money to experience a carrier landing.

The Big E came in 1965 and it was moored way out in harbour or was it off the zoo?

My dad went on it...

Ah, during the Vietnam war, that explains it.

The Chinese have an aircraft carrier sitting at Dailan harbour, bought it off the Russians. Apparently the HMAS Melbourne was kept (at Dailan) & studied for many years although it was bought for scrapping.

Local/State government can still overrule this. Federal government makes the basic laws, state government build on this and make it stricter or leave it the same for that state. So, although Johnny boy might allow nuke ships into the country, Iemma could say ok, but they're not coming to Sydney.

I don't think so, it's like when a suburb declares itself nuclear free, that doesn't stop the NSW & federal govts from running convoys thru there.
I think when it comes to matters of defence & international ports the federal govt has the drop, I could be wrong.
