How about Goonoo Goonoo near Tamworth? There's a main road by that name in town too.

Guess how it's pronounced???

Panda bears from Chinese zoos often have double names like Ling Ling.

Double names (or whatever you call them) are often given affectionately to members of the gentler gender.

In case anyone is interested, I heard on the TV that the meaning of "Wagga" is crow, and "Wagga Wagga" means many crows. Presumably the other double names mean many of something also.

Yep. It's generally accepted as a plural formation.

BTW, somebody upthread mentioned Cullen Bullen. Just to point out that the two parts of that name DO NOT rhyme.

Cullen is pronounced with a short 'u', and Bullen is pronounced with a long one. Just think "Cull" and "Bull", and you'll be right.

It is an old Aboriginal name meaning "Place of extra fingers".

Zig Zag is not quite a double name.

Rt Hon Sir John Winston Howard Spencer Churchill, KCMG, KRVO, MP & Bar (PM 1940-1945, 1952-1956) said:

"Better Jaw Jaw than War War".

Very simple words are distinguished from background noise by repetition of the key sound. Repetion also makes the word sound deliberate rather than an accident occuring by chance and thus meaningless.

Four pages and not one mention of that most wonderful line...

Spike Milligan:
"Woy. Woy. It's Aboriginal. Means 'deep water'.
But which Woy means 'deep', and which Woy means 'water'?
It makes you think."

Goon but not forgotten.

Keeping with the 'double' theme - but veering away from the rails - there is a noted medical doctor living in Adelaide whose christian and surname are the same.

And what is his middle name or initial?

By coincidence I heard a short discussion about this fellow on the radio this morning. His middle name is Dwayne

To make this thread easier to seach for, it should help to include a oneword descriptor such as DoubleName.

MicroSoft Word doesn't like double or repeated words.

That is OK if you write say "it it is" because that is an error.

But MSW treats "Wagga Wagga" as an error too.

About the only workarounds is to write "WaggaWagga" or "Wagga_Wagga" combining the two words into oneword.

Interesting that there is a very similar thread, specifically about place names here in Oz, on another forum I inhabit. And there is a fairly comprehensive list in it. Here it is
