I just read that there was a trial of a tilt train between Sydney-Canberra in 1995. This wasn't just an idea, it was actually trialled, with passengers. The train didn't travel at its fast speed however, because the track needed upgrading for that.
Does anyone know anything more about this? Anything?
I got the info from www.tomw.net.au/atmttrn1.html
With the track upgraded, it was expected to take 2 hours from Sydney-canberra.
Obviously this never eventuated, any theories why?, considering they actually trialled the train, although not at full speed.
Cheers, Muzz.

The train was an X2000 Tilt Train from SJ. The train was trialled as a replacement, and I beleive the company who built the train even placed on the table a more Australia Friendly deisgn, which was subsequently rejected. It went the same was as the Speedrail and any other high speed link between the cities.
I personally remember the arrival of the train at Canberra Station when I was young, bands and tours. Was a very nice train and it is a shame it never went ahead.

To make a mockery, or falsify, the running times achieved Tarago, Bungendore and Queanbeyan Signal Boxes were re-attended during these trials.

... and ran via East Hills.
With the above two factors, the X2000 journey time of roughly 30 mins less than the Xplorer, was not really that fantastic after all.
“The relief Northern Tablelands XPLORER conveys booked seat passengers only for Padulla, Temple Court, Braefield, Belgamba, Tintinhull, Limbri, Kentucky, Kelly’s Plains & Armidale.”

This could actually be a good idea, if they could manage to get a train that only took 3 hours.
The amount of people travelling between Canberra - Sydney - Canberra on coaches everyday would make it viable if a quick journey time were possible.
As I would much prefer the train than going on a crammed coach with only one toilet, plus its more scenic and you can buy food on board and what not.
Whether that is possible or not, and feasable, as it would probably involve track upgrades but it would be money well spent in the end.

It's obvious that the smeggy branch line from Goulburn to Kingston would need major upgrading, but how much would need to be done to the Melbourne-Sydney line between Goulburn and Macarthur to facilitate better travel times?
I would hope any upgraded service would run via East Hills, not Strathfield.
"The trains at Pennant Hills run roughly every half hour. Nobody in their right mind uses a service that shoddy. That so many do just proves how many dumb and/or desperate people there are in Sydney." - MrPC

I think the problem is coming out of Sydney. Well, heck, the whole line needs an upgrade. Why won't the politicians realise they have to spend money to make it!
As "m_set" said, the commuter traffic between these two major cities is massive!
Train's the way to go, yeah......Train's the way to go!
