Yess

City Rail has started to test there new DVA system. The system was on test today at Chatswood and making announcements for trains via Maqurie Park. (It was not playing over the loud speakers, it was an internal test).

The new system highlights the stations on the information boards while to says the name. The new system is not meant to be in full operation until mid 2009, as I sayd its still in testing mode.

The DVA uses a new "younger voice" so it might be bye byes to Gretel Coline
Razz

Thanks
1979

I thought Taylor Owynns voiced the DVA (with Countrylink and helpful advice done by Grant Goldman)?

Anyway, is there any reason they'd be changing the system? To me, the indicator boards need changing, not the automated announcements.

The only other girl I know of who was used on the DVA was Kayle Harris formerly of 101.7

Sounds to me like the system described by 1979 incorporates the indicator and the announcement to run together

Yes, When the announcement starts playing when it says a station E.g. Sutherland it would highlight Sutherland on the indicator board.

The next station is Bondi Junction, they start there tomorrow, but it wont be over the PA (I don't think anyway). The system is very complex and it is made so that it does not sound like a computer. For common routes the sound bytes are in "strands" where a group of stations are announced together,

If they get Jen Hawkins* to do the voice, they'll find more people actually listen to it! As it is, everyones got the earphones in, and don't care!

*or someone.

They might want to start by fixing the PA at Bondi Junction. At the ends of platform 2 you can hear nothing...

The DVA's are next to useless, people in general just tune out to any DVA.
When @ Petersham, our class was shown a video regarding the DVA and this woman standing the wrong side of the Yellow line reading a paper.
The announcement played and no response from the woman, when asked why she didn't move behind the yellow line she sais "I heard the announcement, but didn't think it applied to me."

I find I tune in when the stops are being announced, but the rest I tune out, especially when the person in the control room decides to play the "mega mix" of all the announcements back to back

I wonder if the speech is mixed in multiple channels, before outputted (?) to the speakers. I think I did something like that in 2003 for a college project, using my own voice recordings, other sounds and ModPlug Tracker.

This allowed me to control possible overlaps of samples (by parts of a second), thus producing more natural-sounding speech.

It's really annoying when:

Arrow Two announcements play at once (happens a lot at Hurstville/Kogarah/Rockdale where trains arrive at two platforms simultaneously)

Arrow Neverending clogs of roughly fifteen 'For your safety announcements' that mention every possible cryptic precaution'.

Arrow Announcing services that come in over 20 mins time

Arrow Illegible announcements & poor language skills, especially when station staff are announcing service interuptions

Arrow The 'Passengers are reminded smoking is not permitted in covered and enclosed areas such as toilets, waiting rooms etc. etc.'. Do we really need examples of where not to smoke?

So the DVA system needs a huge update. Twisted Evil
