It would require an early morning start, but
Downside is that if you're going to Canberra, you'd need an overnight stay in Sydney.

I've toyed with the idea of taking the family (I'm talking wife and two kids now) to the Gold Coast by train, but the connections to and from Canberra are either too dicey, or mean an overnight stay ... |
