the entire loco was originally going to be like an EL, ie. cab width the whole way down, but they ran out of money or whatever so that never happened.

I tell you what these locos are more ugly than 2100.The cab front is just flat not like the ELs.What i mean is that the ELs have a small angle while our 2100 has a more angle.
The pics don't do justice to the cab.

oi! 2100 is the best looking loco in the state simply becuase it is the only one that doesn't look like it was designed 100 years ago Wink

alright well i am off to have a shower and head over to burnie now, the MKA's are on the move very soon.

hey all.

went down this morning and had a squiz, lookin very shiny indeed they were, especially when lined up against 2100 which fronted up to take them to launceston.

i think they look a bit funny, but that should hopefully change when they have their cowcatchers fitted...

here is a pic from my day...

*ok i am having no luck with images in forums lately, it doesn't seem to be workin like it used to. you can find the pictures in my gallery in the tasmania section.

You probably saw it on another thread but I saw one of these machines painted for PN-T no. 2138 when I was in Launceston last thurs.24-02-05. I thought it looked alright-definately something different. You guys whinge about how ugly some locos are, I reckon 2101 is the crankiest looking critter I have seen for a while(but I love it). Just be thankful that not everything has a flat face like the North Island. Eg. NR G BL 422 81 N ALF 442 82 90 85 86 80 PN Q S(WAGR) 2800 4000 V 700 ........

I think the main problem people have accepting the ZP and MKA's looks is just that the design is unusual.

It is not an inherently aesthetically displeasing layout for a loco, and if the ZP had an EL nose as originally hoped for [!] it would have been quite a handsome engine.

But there have been very few engines with the sloped nose design, full stop, and even fewer with that sort of cab design added to a hood.

Here's a 1950s example from GE, in the Philippines:

Here's a modern Indonesian version:

I think once the MKAs are doing the rounds in the PNT livery - a scheme which has definitely improved the ZR's looks - they will start to turn a few heads.

And if their reliability improves, they will end up being firm favourites. A distinct change from all those flat faces on the mainland.

My only regret with the PNT scheme is that I would like to have seen the ZP make it into ATN maroon/yellow as depicted on the Tassteamalive site. That is a scheme that would have improved this loco's appearance considerably.

Have the MKAs come out to play yet? I got my photos back (35mm) and the shot of 2138 is pretty smeggy. Photo quality is ok but location and circumstances have made for a pretty average shot.If anyone is interested I will get it scanned and put it on this forum(unless it is running around and you have all seen it!).

Put the pic up cause i haven't seen one yet!. I reckon they will be on trials around Launceston, most likely the Bell Bay line. They think they would make only 3 Burnie-Hobart trips before they stay here in Burnie to run the Melba line trains
