Chris Anderson has it, twas Gerogery.
The cab ride was early in the 1980s, not long after the introduction of CTC between Albury and Junee.
The next or previous photo was of the speedo, locked firmly on 160 kph, as it stayed for much of the trip northwards to Junee. Something else we have lost in the name of progress.
The pub in the photo was a typical country pub. A place a friend and I found one night when we were looking for a bed in a holiday period. The friend was, at the time, a driver for what is now Cityrail.
The pub was run by a couple named Butch & Elaine Gardiner, first rate hosts. We ate there and had a few medicinal ales. We then bought a supply of VB and moved to the railway yard opposite to watch the nightly procession which started with the up Spirit of Progress around 11, followed by the Aurora, and a succession of freights.
Actually we did this a few times over the early to mid 1980s, always in winter, and for some reason the VB never got warm. Come to think of it, neither did we.
There was a certain sense of event as the signals at one or the other end of the loop would come off and we would wonder what was about to come through. My friend, even in our less that totally sober states, would always ensure we stood back near the fence to avoid alarming any incoming crews. My excuse was that that was where we left the VB.
Some of the trains would come through at a fair clip as we were in the middle of a long stretch of 115 kph track. Somehow that just added to the experience.
We stood there one night, and one of us asked the other whether it had suddenly got darker. We worked out that the pub had shut and the street lights had gone off at the same time. A lengthy discussion ensued as to whether they and the lights in the pub were connected to the same switch.
At some time in the wee small hours we would wander back across the Olympic Way to the pub and fall into bed. In the morning Elaine would cook up a massive breakfast, something else which would not do me a lot of good these days.

Thanks for sharing the recollections about Gerogery with us mate. Brings back a lot of memories from my younger days and gunzelling/camping trips.
As far as a photo, don't really have much of anything to use at the moment, so it's open floor.
Mr. Anderson... surprised to see me?
