Okay if the creek happened to be Croppa Creek then this could be North Star. I said Boggabilla ages ago - it's always nice to know when you're on the right line...
Mark in your diaries 26 March 2011 to vote out the current NSW Government. Who could do worse?

Is there a station called Croppa? The line is one with a station named after the creek. I havent heard of a station called croppa, can cant think of one that would be down of North Star.

Cant be a terminus according to the clues. Was Gwabegar a terminus in the 50s, as it appears to be now (according to Hema Maps Rail Journeys of Australia which includes all operating rail lines as of this year)
I dont know what it is myself yet here I am "correcting" people . . .

Well there's definitely a station called "Croppa Creek" and a creek called "Croppa" - North Star is the next station 'down' from Croppa Ck while Crooble is the next station 'up'. All that North West area got its worst ever flood in 1955. The Murrumbidgee area copped it in 1956 - if not worst, then its worst flood of the 20th century.

well, the post where you conclude that it's not a terminus is based on some seriously hard to follow logic...perhaps someone got their 'up' and 'down' confused or something.
anyway, appart from the 'not a terminus' criteria, Gwabegar is on a tiny branch, and the town is near Baradine Creek, next stop on the line is Baradine. North of main west, never electrified. |
I say its not a terminus, because unless the terminus faces away from Sydney (like Toronto did), a train cannot go "down" from a terminus. Therefore, if the station named after the creek is down of the location photographed, the location cannot be a terminus. Its definately not toronto.
Following your guess with the creek/line guess, and going up rather than down, Coonabarrabran would be the location. And drat it, I'm not the first to say it. Just to cover all bases though, I'm going to say the next town up of that - Binnaway.

After an extensive search, I now believe its Baradine
After looking at the photos, I'm hoping I'm right, while the track layout is not the same today, I've found some evidence:

Have a look at Baradine, which unlike Coona, has:
- A staff hut
- Locomotive servicing facilities (namely a disused turntable)
- A site where a small barracks once stood
The station has been removed, so its impossible to compare, and the track plan is not right (missing a track) but that said the general layout looks right.
Coonabarrabran would also be a good bet, the track plan is right. However, the cutting doesnt seem to fit, and there seem to be too many trackside buildings. The station building burnt down 2 years ago.
Gwabegar is a distant candidate, though the track layout looks a little unlikely for mine, it also doesnt seem to have any loco facilities beyond the triangle. The staff hut there, too, is on the site of the old station.
Well, I think we should be put out of our misery, and be told if we have the right line or not.

Having found this, the coona shots down the bottom, especially one or two of the yard shots, makes me think its coona. That and the water tower visible to the left of the train in the yard, showing there were steam servicing facilities here - the water tower being near where the coal stage was.

Sorry about the late reply.
Gwabegar is the correct location. I actually went down to see Roy to confirm this based on the comments made, but it is actually downtown Gwabegar, and not Baridine.
I apoligise if the "down" clue caused confusion, especially in context of a terminal station. A train travelling from Gwabegar to Coona would be a down train. (I hope)
I have to run, I got dinner with my kids, and will fill you all in with the finer details as soon as I can, some time tomorrow but definately tomorrow night.

A train running Gwabegar to Coona would be an Up train.

Well the down clue did cause confusion, but the location was still guessed. Down usually indicates going away from Sydney and up usually indicates going towards Sydney. As I said though, in locations such as the Toronto branch, which is a branch that you used to access by points facing in the up direction, up was in the direction of the terminus as that was closer to Sydney than the junction.
No dramas though, that was definately a cracker of a quiz. I would not have got that location, I dont know my creek names well enough

Down is always away from Sydney and up is always towards Sydney unless otherwise specifically stated in the relevant WTT/Local Appendix. The relative distances of the junction and terminus from Sydney have nothing to do with it.
