The final nail in Cowra’s rail coffin could be driven with the possible closure of the last rail line in and out of the town.

Obviously there will be an impact on the LVR. I wonder how severe it will be.

I wouldn't get too upset yet. Once the ore starts running that's 2 or 3 trains a week on top of whatever grain comes out of there. During a good season the line is very busy.

With the price of fuel unstable why would the Government want to close five lines? Spending on public transport should include the bush as well.
Its a bit rude considering the money that just got spent on Epping and Hornsby.

Is it just me, or do things in NSW get upgraded before they get closed down?

That, and I was thinking as well as FD, it makes no sense to close the line particularly with the up and coming Ore train due to operate out of there.

I'll remain optimistic about this!

It's a long standing tradition. If they paint it, they knock it down. Upgrade it, and then close it.

Hopefully the ore will do the trick.

Don't be, I asked the same query not long ago!

I wasn't too concerned until now, as only last month, when we were leaving Cowra on our Epic Parkes Long Weekend, a fellow LVR volunteer and I joked about the upgrades to Cowra yard and what was imminent Sad

I'm with Fireman Dave on this - a wiser man for sure, don't know about older.

Lets ask what does "closing" a line mean - without an Act of Parliament all it means is withdrawing services above or below rail. If the line can be made to work, well where there's a will there's a way.

That said, and no comment on this one specifically, but not every spike or sleeper is sacred.

Personally for example I would not spend any public $ at all on the Murwillumbah line until and unless it is converted and connected to the 3 foot 6 inch network in which form it might have a viable future.

I'd happily lose all those alignments that local self-serving interests forced on the nation against the best advice of people like Whitton (so hello and goodnight Picton! other than as a tourist and maybe commuter service ...)

And to really put the head above the parapet, why not hand over the XPT to GSR and let them negotiate paths with real train operators or get out of the way - and if government wants to provide subsidised travel to older people etc, why not give them the choice of how they want to travel?

Oh and by the way, on the choice between services to people in Hornsby (even as planned by the pathetic collection of clowns currently posing as a government) or the teeming millions living between Cowra and Demondrille, plus the odd railfan service however nice, umm, wow, just let me think for a minute . Response to a global financial crisis involves spraying money out the door as fast as possible but even so there must be some limits.

Rail planning has hopefully moved beyond the idea of a line for every country member.

Here endeth the rant of the evening from an imaginary, though under-rated, 4-8-2.

Well, to be fair to Picton - what other option did Whitton have to make an ascent to the Southern Highlands??

I'd like to have seen the estimates to build 50 - 70 metre high sandstone viaducts in 1862! There are some large gorges to be crossed along the 'Wentworth Route'

Last week on the thread about HPC402 I posted:

"Finally a Hi Rail appeared from Young on the branch and left the line in the yard. (I was told the line had been closed owing to track condition, but had been reopened for the tour - a final inspection was called for but they were expecting the tour to run to timetable)"

So the line was closed, I understand due to track condition, on the 12th or before. The tour was allowed to run, however, at reduced speed and probably because of the light weight of the railcar involved. But A track inpection was held before the tour was allowed to run.

On the same day, we saw two semi trailers loading recovered wooden sleepers, still with baseplates, in Harden yard. These (fully laden) headed out over the bridge at Demondrille in the direction of Young, and we assumed that these sleepers were to correct the track condition that had caused the closure.

Of course, the mini budget intervened between these activities.
