Just got back from Tassie.spent 2 weeks playing tourist/railfan depending on who was asking(tourist for my wife).
Just a couple of things I need to know.

ZC32 at Don is listed as being preserved there on 1 page on this forum and listed as being owned by another party on a different page. Does anyone know the truth.

Is there a push in Tas.heritage circles to try to preserve a ZC or a ZB or meybe even Za4 before they are all gone.

Tried to railfan Launceston and in particular East Tamar yard. Is there an easy way assuming I am not an employee. Perhaps that is the key-any pn recruiters reading this???

Is the Don river rly going to restore Y8? Perhaps it could be painted so it looks like it is an historic artifact.

Has anyone seen U3 in the city park at Launceston. This loco(the only one to receive yellow and black Paint) has been turned into a freak show by the council and/or Rotary. Before you say it was for insurance reasons so the kiddies cant hurt themselves, have a look at the cannon preserved about 100m away with no rubbish welded to that(rightly so). Seems the loco was open slather without any thought for history.

Besides my disgust at U3 I thought that my trip was fantastic. I photographed 53 different preserved locos and 38 different PN locos including at least 1 from very class! I heard about locos going to Deloraine for a repaint. Where to? I had a look but couldn't find anywhere that looked like it might be the spot.

Does anybody know who owns the historic equipment operated by the West Coast Wilderness Railway? I know that Federal Hotels has the licence to operate it(and print the money!!) but I think at least some of the equipment is owned by the Abt Railway Preservation Soc. Is that correct?

See you next time I get down there-I'll be back!

ZC32 is not owned by the DRR, and if it was would not be preseved as a ZC. i think that is all that should be said about that for the moment. from anyone.

as for Y8 as far as i know the plan is to give it a coat of paint and tidy it up a little, and thats as far as it goes.

east tamar yard, well best not to go tresspassing through there, but they can not do anything about you standing on the road and viewing the operations.

i agree with your comments about U3, the same goes for the locomotive at delloraine. public liability is becoming a bit of a joke...

Now at Deloraine there is a green shed out past the rail yard, heading towards Launceston. Thats the paint shed.

I got told that Y8 could be swapped for Y3 cause Y3 is still a goer.

Now for the Za4, a ZB or ZC i can actully see DRR get 2141, ex ZC11 cause it was based at Devonport for years. But the ZA and ZB they could be rebuilt into ZR type locos, which is a rumour that i have heard for years too!.

Also tasrail2100 i see what you mean. DRR has tried to get that H at the strawberry farm, E1(or is that E2) at Deloraine, plus H at Perth but no they can't have them. A pity really.

Thanks for clearing up some issues gents. Regarding the H class at hillwood strawberry,I spoke to the owner and he said it is for sale but the railway preservation groups keep approaching him to give it to them. According to one of the guys at Derwent Valley rps the asking price is 25,000 . Seems pretty reasonable to me(but not my wife-sorry guys I cant help much!).

P.S. I wont mention ZC32 again-at least not for a while.

Hmmm $25,000 for H5( i think) which has some boiler damage. I don't even think its worth that either. I reckon DVRPS will get it too, for spares parts for H2.

Definately too nice external condition to be used as a donor loco. Perhaps it would be better located and cosmetically restored at the Queen Vic museum in Launceston. They have a well thought out rail presentation and only seem to lack a major steam loco.

well, the many roadworks between launceston and devonport on friday afternoon served some small purpose...

due to bridge work at delloraine there was a set of traffic lights on the highway, which i was stopped at for 5 very long minutes, but to make light of a pretty boring situation i grabbed the camera and took the opprtunity to take some snaps of the paint shed through the passenger side window. although i often get to see it from this angle, i would never normally be able to stop so i guess roadworks are good for something after all (besides fixing the road that is).
