Riding my bike down the Sandringham, i passed Brighton Beach

I noticed that the sidings are being dug out? The tracks aren't there...

Can i have info about this? Platform 3 (or is it 1) has it's tracks in there, but it looks like there no access...

Replacement tracks or a parking lot!?!!? Shocked

Wha?!

The sidings are going to be rebuilt shortly, as you have already been told on MSN.

(P.S. It's platform 1)

Are they intending on doing some more permanent stabling there?

I remember recently thinking to myself of Brighton Beach and for some reasonhow it would have to hold ono trains during an event or disruption. I'm scratching my head as to what it was though!

Not that I know of. Brighton Beach is often used when alterations are being done to trains, such as adding features or altering liveries.

Thanks for that.

On the note of odd stabling sidings, is theremuch future for Oakleigh?

The sidings were used for emergency stabling, and I'm guessing when access to Melbourne Yard is limited due to the Spencer St works. They have also filmed commercials/movies there on platform 1, while the line remains operational, as it is not in the way.

A few months ago, a couple of Siemens were stabled there for a few days. They didn't appear to move at all for a few days, as the same sets were still visible.

As a stabling facility I'm guessing it is temporary and only used for emergencies. There is no cyclone fencing and would be very easy to access for the uninvited. Might go check out tomorrow, if anyone wants some photos.

What jfan is saying is that Brighton Beach sidings are going to be dedicated for a number of months to modifying the trains with the new vigilance control system.

The siding tracks are being re-laid to allow better access for contractors, perhaps a little more width between trains and some vehicle access at the Beach Rd end.

It then becomes a more maintenance friendly facility like Camberwell, Ringwood, Nth Melb etc where road vehicles can drive right up beside the stabled trains.

If the train has been placed in the appropriate track !

Went down at lunctime today. They've pulled up the two outside stabling tracks from just past the set of points where they join/split, but kept the platform track as-is.

They're digging at the baulks at the moment - a guy wearing a flouro mainco jacket commented that if they weren't careful, they'll excavate the tunnel!

Just looking a tthe geography, I can't see how they can widen the area noticably without cutting into the carpark space. They might be able to go from "minimum clearance" to "room to walk between" but not much more than that.

I wonder if all that expense is worth such a small gain, or if cutting into the carpark is going to happen, in which case the staunchions will need to be moved and so on...ugh!

And we lose even more valuable parking spots. Heck why not just make it all 1 hour parking with ticket machines. Seems to be the way the neighbouring streets are going.... (well at least with 4 hour parking, no tickets yet) [/rant]

That's an attention-getter!

Any idea why? From reading this article, it all seems a rather good idea to me.

What does the installation involve? And what is the average turnaround time for a 3 car set?

Are the unions unhappy because the drivers "driving" will be recorded? I know nothing about it.
EDIT: Google and ye shall find Wink The Age article on VICERS (2005)

Will Brighton Beach be the sole place this installation work is carried out? Might get some interesting movements on the Sandy line if it is the case!
