It seems like, after nearly a week, that a clue may be in order. This location is on the same system as Barney Point. It also gives us the power.

I thought it looked familiar so thats why I thought it was Mary Valley or Emerald Engine sheds and then when realised it was coal unloading the only two I had visited were Swanbank and Barney Point
The fact it was Stanwell eluded me at first because when I was there during the building of the power station I never saw a train in it
My main role was to keep the chimney up straight-surveyor-and must admit for a train lover it was a good vantage point watching the central line trains. Will post a photo tomorrow when find one

Well this is a bit different- bonus points if you can tell where it is as don't think there are too many in Qld but could be wrong as this is the only one I have seen so far
But the main question is what is its role and why?

Maybe a little more common than you think qredge.
Dont know what they are particularly called, and cant say where this particular one is, but there is one of these at Bluff, at the eastern end of the Water Road, closest to the station.
The terminating rails on either side of V in the points move against spring pressure when a wheel flange passes over the points. In your case when a vehicle moves from mainline to loop, the left wheel pushes the swinging plate over. Springs are placed at each end of the flat plate on the right hand side of the left rail, at each end of the plate (large black knobby things at the far end, partially obscured at this end) Copious amounts of grease on the plate allow for ease of movement.
In the case of these at Bluff, the mainline is actually the station loop, so because they automatically return to mainline setting, I guess its some sort of safety measure against the possibility of the 2 halves of the points being set for both roads at the same time.

Yes good enough for me- this one was at Gordonvale and the dock road at the end of the platform.
My understanding is the springloaded v crossings by being closed when not in use allows higher speed through the mainline as versus the opening caused in the normal set of points
This siding seemed to by used only by maintenance vehicles so the inconvience of the arrangement was not a problem

I will make it a little easier by saying its no where on the Newlands system. And I witnessed it personally, and took the piccy. The worn wheelsets were only 1 month old- still had the fluro green delivery tag on them, when they had to be replaced due to bad flatspots.
I will post pics of the flatspots when the correct guess is made, not that it would help in determining where this took place, just too tired at the moment. Suffice to say they were mainly slid about 20km from where the wagons were cut out to where this operation took place.
Hows the new job Mr exGCC/GRC?
