I think you may find allot of people monitor what is going on without speaking up as they do not want to be seen as gimme's

I think Smalfalfa has nailed it.

It does seem to be an unwritten Forum rule that if you dare to ask a very basic question of "when", you are automatically branded a "gimme pig" for no other reason than possessing a natural curiosity.

There is no lack of interest , just a fear of being ostracized.

Please don't get me wrong. my thanks along with my absolute admiration goes out to those who have the skills to master Gmax and Route Editor, who produce some absolutely fabulous rollingstock and routes and distribute them free of charge.

I'm just one of the lonely dogs sitting outside a Butchers shop looking in the window and wondering if I'll ever get one of those juicy bones I've been told so much about.

Here here.

Its not just a mention of 'when' that has been doing it lately either. Any conversation or opinion on what someone might like to see is leading to flames and people labelled 'gimmes'. Bit sad, but at least now it has stopped!

Keep up the good work everybody, although no-one says it as much anymore, without you nobody would actually be still using their MSTS!!!!

I can see where you might get that idea, but honestly, there is a difference between encouragement and the questions of progress, to constantly badgering someone about release dates and whining that it's taking too long for a project to see the light of day.

It's the latter group that annoy the crud out of me. To ask about progress or to offer encoragement is, at least to me, always a good thing, as it inspires me to keep working. Just like the people who are afraid to ask for fear of being labelled a G-P, the developers and route builders like to know that what they are doing is worthwhile and has someone waiting for it in the end... after all, what is the point of doing something if no-one is interested in it.

Just remember, healthy interest good, whining and bitching BAD

Mr. Anderson... surprised to see me?

Anything that route developers come up with at the moment is better than previously released. At least it is Australian and relevant. Even some of the basic stuff is an improvement on driving Australian rollingstock through US or English country sides. It just does not seem right.

I can see where Chris is coming from with the encouragement versus G-P comments. Not being a route writer I do not know how much work goes into one but I have done some activities and they can be a pain. THis pain is slight to what I read about Route Writing. Keep up the excellent work and when it comes it comes.

It is always great to receive something new no matter how large or small.

You all know by now that I don't tolerate "vapourware".

The link appeared because I have received the final CD of the route. And far as I can see, it's bulletproof.

The challenge now is to package it as compactly as possible - so far I've got the installer down to 160MB, but there are a few more hoops I'm going to make the installme.bat file jump through, so my target is under 150MB for the single installer and a three-part (50MB each) installer (similar to the Adelaide route).

As big_ed said, mid-August is looking good. As the date draws closer, more information will appear on the Route page at my site.

Currently, with end-of-year AND quarterly BAS/GST statements due in the next week or so, I'm not doing anything much with MSTS.

Hi big_ed,

the faithful are waiting patiently.
I don't like asking when, I just wait for the news, and thanks for the updates.

Any particular reason why there are no shadows in Steve's preview shots ?

Switched off, or too time/resource consuming on a route of that scale ?

Cheers

Someone has forgot to add Shadow ( RECT ) to their ref file obviously. I'll admit it's not that easy error to notice, but unless you use search and replace it could weeks to replace every tree with shadows.

I've ditched using forests for the very reason that they don't display shadows and it is more flexible to use stand alone objects. Especially if trying to do as much of a route photoreal as you can.

And just a note, shadows are not default with David Rowe's trees.

Not neccesarily, they might have done it on purpose.

I just asked cause as Steve's sample shots with a bridge and trees it was very obvious that they were off. In some shots u dont notice cause of the weather/time setting or percularaity of the train/landscape and it doesnt occur to you that its missing.

Err why on earth would u use rect with a tree ? - Use *Treeline*. Yes I know it looks dodgy with some trees

Dynamic is no good either.

Thats just as bad as planting a tree onto concrete terrain :p *cough* kuju *cough*

Though i'll give it to you cause sometimes rect can work better than dynamic in certain circumstances due to the time of day reacting with dynamic.

(Remeber that MSTS is 'crude' compared to modern lighting and shadowing methods, even though it implements stencil shadowing_

Try the default clumps with treeline.

If doing alot of trees, set the shadow on the trees closest to the track or in visible spots

Sorry Steve and Chris Cool

I haven't had a problem with the "RECT" setting yet. I'm a tad unfamiliar with what dynamic actually does. I only started notice of these options a couple of weeks ago, but your opinion is welcome

shadows (Railpage Image Gallery)

I don't find it to be unsightly at all. If you like could you post a comparative image with your preferred settings?

Well, excuuuuuuse me!

Just kidding Very Happy
When those trees were finished, I didn't know about adding the shadow line to the ref file as I don't run with shadows on and didn't receive any feedback in regards to how to fix it. The .ref file for my latest versions have the shadow line added.

Basically a shadow is created for each poly and they move in relation to the sun.

trees (Railpage Image Gallery)

As you can see, it looks strange when applied to scenery objects.

Is the second tree from the right one of mine? I'll have to redo the alpha if it is. And how did you get your compass to disappear? Wink

Nah, it's mine. I had 2 photos of it and I chose the wrong one for the model. It will probably be redone in the coming months.

I deliberately did that with the compass as it wasn't related to shadows Razz

This route will be great, and a test for my jumbo hauled trains.
