Back due to popular demand, here is another installment of the 'what is that crazy ARHS doing in respect of those Southern Aurora carriages'...

RMS2360

I dont want to steal the thunder of Beyer_6029, but ill provide the following precis on where things are at.

As most interested people probably already know, the car has done two long distance trips (the Dubbo trip at Easter and a producers/lion king train at the end of the May to Sydney)

The exterior is now complete, looks brilliant, has a nice black underframe (after being needle gunned) and has the decals applied.

The Cth type bogies for this car are yet to be restored and therefore is still running on a pair of "CAB" bogies, although someone may wish to correct me on the name of this type... Anyway, its the NSW version of aurora bogies, not the Vic version. This is not a desparately urgent thing to do, but it will need to happen in due course. The bogies it currently runs on are ok and ride quite well, but if anyone feels like the urgency to come down and help needle gun/restore a pair of bogies..... well, you know who to msg!

The passenger dining saloon is generally in excellent condition and little needs to be done to it. It was missing some curtains between the windows, but those have now been made and are fitted. Also there are now two pictures hanging at the kitchen end of the passenger saloon, which has increased the ambience of the car.

Now, the kitchen on the other hand is a completely different issue. Basically, all the ovens, cooking benches, the heater cupboard and plant where the bain marie was have been removed. The walls surrounding the kitchen have also been gutted to removed the plant/floor from the kitchen.

Before any new cooking machinery/plant can be installed, the floor of the kitchen has to be repaired with new Stainless crossbeams, as the old ones were completely wasted. Despite being stainless they were off a low grade and after having 32 years of water slopping on them from the bain marie they are quite wasted. As of last night, beyer_6029 had welded in at least one of the new cross beams and had cut the other ready to be welded in.

Once the beams are welded in, a new timber floor can be made up and installed (the old one was rotted from continual water damage).

The new equipment has been chosen for what will be used by the society to do its restaurant service. However, before this can be purchased and installed etc, a gas installation has to be designed, then made and installed.

There is realistically about another two to three months work before the car will be fully functioning, although Mr 6029 may wish to correct me on this one!!! If he feels so inspired he may also like to add some photos of his work (or should i say destruction!!!, he he he he he)

NAM2341

This little (loose use of the word) project is plodding along quite nicely at the moment. The external stainless steel preparation is finished and looks extremely shiny and nice. It needs its 'Sleeping' decals and 'NAM2341' decals to be applied and it will look a million bucks.

The underframe of the carriage has been 95% needle gunned in preparation of a black paint application, and in fact, some of the underframe already has the grey metal primer applied to it. Hopefully, this weekend (assuming i can get a working needle gun) my aim is to have the underframe of this carriage finished ie. cleaned, primed and sprayed black.

The interior of this car is in reasonable condition. Last night I liberated an interior window frame from LAN2324 to fit into the NAM, as it was missing and the car now has a full complement of windows and venitians, albeit some need some minor work...

The showers and associated plumbing should be finished either later this week or at least by next weekend (31st), which would them allow us to start back on working out the electrical side of getting the water heaters to work.

Once the plumbing is worked out, work will then proceed on replacing fogged out windows (arises from acid damage from the car washes, if you dont know what i mean, you have to have a look at the cars). I think just about every window in the NAM needs changing out.

There is also substantial tidying up work on the vinyl on the walls, cleaning up of the carpet and tidying up the chips on the painted surfaces on the interior.

Of course, finally, the retention toilet issue needs to be resolved with RIC as well. This is yet to be mooted about, but we do have some thoughts on this matter and will make a determination later on when the work is required to be done...

Optimistically, I would like to say that car would be ready for the New Years Eve train to Sydney, which is kinda what im working towards...

As is usually the case, anyone who feels so inclined to help (you dont need trade skills) please PM me and we can find you a task to do!!!

Cheers,

M

Heres a couple of photos of the work in being done to the kitchen floor of RMS 2360. The two floor rails have been welded into place and I am currently in the process of replacing the other attachment rails for the floor boards situated under the ovens, hot cupboard and the corridor. Once these are inplace I will be able to fit the new insulation and floor boards.
I will be posting photos and updates of the various stages of progression on the works of both RMS 2360 & NAN 2341.

Due to the over whelming interest of the work being done to RMS 2360 and NAM 2341, heres another instalment of

RMS 2360

All the floor attachment rails have been welded into place and the new floor boards have been cut and test fitted. The last remaining task before the floor boards can be fitted and secured into place is to prime and under coat the timber to seal it from moisture. After the wood has been sealed I will lay new non-slip lino to the floor in the kitchen work space and under the new oven space.

I will have another update ont eh progress of the work for all of the devoted readers of this thread.

P.S. Monday I have the rest of the end caps for the showers and I will chase up those o-rings from a bearing supplier.
Cool
Some of the filth and rotten insulation int eh floor of the RMS
All the filth has been cleaned out and the new insulation and new stainless steel rails have been fitted.
The new floor boards during their test fit adn teh mounting frame for the bainmarie over the top.

When you gutted the kitchen, did you find much/any evidence of the 1990 fire?

Cheers

@DavidB - yeah there is quite a bit of scorching on some of the old insulation and timber panelling. WCR did a reasonable job of removing most of the obvious marks, but obviously they didnt go into the floor boards like we are doing now.

@Beyer6029 - re NAM2341 Brass cappings now fitted to all shower compartments on the old isolation taps and also fixed up the vinyl-water damage problems in the aisle. Also have enough tap fittings now to reassemble the mixing valves. Will get the no.6 O rings tomorrow morning, if you dont have them already...

With any luck we might be able to put some water in the system tomorrow night!!! Cool
