NOTE: SMU/IMU are Electric Multiple Units

Downer EDI and Bombardier to supply rail cars to Queensland Rail under contract valued at $212M
Tuesday, 2 November 2004
Downer EDI Limited (Downer EDI) today announced that its Rail division, EDI Rail, in joint venture with Bombardier Transportation (Australia) Pty Limited, has received an order from Queensland Rail (QR) for the supply of 24 three-car sets, comprised of 16 Interurban Multiple Unit (IMU) trains for the Brisbane to Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast rail services and a further 8 Suburban Multiple Unit (SMU) trains for the Brisbane suburban network.
Advice to the market coincides with this morning's announcement in Brisbane of the new contract by the Premier of Queensland, Peter Beattie, and Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Paul Lucas.
The trains will be supplied by EDI Rail's joint venture with Bombardier at EDI Rail's Maryborough facilities in Queensland, with delivery planned for the period November 2006 to November 2008. The value of the contract is approximately $212 million (EDI Rail share $113 million).
Chief Executive Officer of EDI Rail, Guy Wannop, said the order continues EDI Rail's and the joint venture's long and successful association with QR. "Over the years, all of QR's passenger rail car fleet, including the high tech and successful Cairns Tilt Train, have been built at EDI Rail's Maryborough facilities," Mr Wannop said.
"Winning the new work follows a history and a platform of successful collaboration established with QR, which over the years has evolved to provide vehicles that suit the particular requirements of QR and their rail infrastructure. This enables a low risk development path for the design and supply of the trains," he said.
"The new contract also provides continuity of employment for the skilled labour force we have in Maryborough and allows us to continue our training and skills development commitments in the Maryborough region," Mr Wannop said.
The new order continues EDI Rail's successful association with Bombardier in the supply of rail passenger vehicles from Maryborough. The joint venture is currently building 31 trains (three-car sets) for the Western Australian Government's new Perth Metro Rail program. The first of these three-car sets entered service in Perth on time and on budget in early October 2004.
EDI Rail is Australia's leading rollingstock provider with comprehensive design, manufacture, maintenance and refurbishment capability. Downer EDI is an Australian top-150 company, which provides comprehensive engineering and infrastructure management services to the public and private transport, energy, communications and resources sectors in Australia, New Zealand and Asia.

QR Signs $212m Train Supply Deal
11 November 2004
An EDI Rail and Bombardier Transportation joint venture has secured a $212m contract to supply trains for the Queensland Rail (QR) passenger fleet.
QR has ordered 24 three-car sets under a four-year contract with delivery planned from November 2006 to November 2008.
The order consists of 16 interurban multiple unit trains for the Brisbane to Sunshine Coast services and eight suburban multiple units for the Brisbane suburban network.
They will be supplied through EDI Rail’s Maryborough workshops – which also manufactured the Cairns tilt train.
EDI Rail chief executive Guy Wannop said the order would continue the company’s long association with QR. “Winning the new work follows a history and a platform of successful collaboration established with QR, which over the years has evolved to provide vehicles that suit the particular requirements of QR and their rail infrastructure.” Mr Wannop said.
“This enables a low risk development path for the design and supply of trains.”
Queensland Premier Peter Beattie said the carriage order is part of preparations to meet the expected 1m population increase forecast for southeast Queensland by 2026.
The government is investing an extra $1b over four years in services and infrastructure for the CityTrain network in the region, Mr Beattie said.
The EDI Bombardier joint venture is already supplying similar trains in a supply contract with the Western Australian Government’s New Metrorail project. The first sets entered service in October.

Bombardier Receives a $185-Million Order for Electric Multiple Units in Australia
Saturday, May 11, 2002 14:47
Bombardier Transportation’s scope is to design the railcars and supply propulsion and electrical systems. EDI-Rail will be supplying bodyshells and bogies. Testing and commissioning will be carried out by both companies as part of the joint venture. Assembly will be carried out at the Bombardier Transportation – EDI-Rail joint venture plant in Maryborough, Queensland. Propulsion equipment will be manufactured at Bombardier Transportation’s plant in Västerås, Sweden.

The successful joint venture established in the manufacture of 31 3-Car EMU's for Transperth will continue in the construction of 16 3-Car IMU and 8 3-Car SMU for QR.
The entire article can be found in the EDI/Bombardier Electric Multiple Unit(s) thread of the Western Australia forum.

wonder if the new IMU/SMUs will differ slightly again. MK1 and MK2 differed with the roof mounted air condition units, 2 for the MK1s and 1 for the MK2 in the centre.
I guess it'll be good, I still would prefer to see the diesels return.

They will be almost identical to Transperth's B Series EMUs. In the artists' impression I noticed that the marker lights and head lights were repositioned.
Just over a year now (November 2006) until IMU 161 is due to be delivered!

Just thought I would get in first before someone started an arguement ...
"They're not going to be EMUs, they're SMUs and IMUs"
Won't mention any names ...

The max speed on the IMU is 130km/ph. Not 140 like the ones running now.
The doors are different spacing so they will not line up with the marks at Central.

Definitly not me, because I have read certain forms from QR saying about preping up the trains in the morning "Walk over to EMU stabling yard. Start up train. Check for any problems etc"
I've been a naughty boy

The Diesel Tilt Train is not a diesel multiple unit. It has two light weight power cars at each end of the train, one pushing the other pulling.
I thought one would have known this ...
Don't believe me? Have a look at a recent photo of the train (the Power Car is on the lead)

Just a minor one, mate! You can be forgiven for that!
Each Power Car (DTD54xx) has two 1350kW (1810HP) MTU Engines. That means each Power Car has 2700kW (3620HP) and the entire train (with two Power Cars) 5400kW (7240HP). The Disabled Sitter Cars (DTP74xx) provide power for the train's auxiliaries.
The Diesel Tilt Train's substandard NSW counterpart, the eXpensive Passenger Train (XPT) only has 2000HP per Power Car (XP20xx), one pushing the other pulling. The trailing Power Car provides power for the train's auxiliaries as well as forward propulsion.
What do you think of the new Transperth EMUs, Graham? They're basically what our new SMU/IMU will look like.

The Auxiliary power for the CTT is supplied from the power cars. There are 2 alternators in each power car that are linked to the main engines... It's a pretty complex system, but when it's working properly it's pretty bullet proof.
