These 2 sets have been doing Gold Coast workings in the last week.

Why is it that the Gold Coast line always gets the best trains?
One answer is that it is an inter-urban line and requires the facilities found on IMUs. Since all the IMU's are relatively new it means Gold Coast line gets mostly new trains. Fair enough.
I don't understand why these brand new SMU's are sent straight to the Gold Coast line. If a new SMU is adequate without a toilet or luggage racks surely an EMU could be put on the Gold Coast line and the new trains spread around a bit? Are Gold Coast people special?

I guess in some respects the Gold Coast line is Citytrain's flagship route, and QR's only real modern "intercity" service.
Yes - obviously Traveltrain runs services between different cities, but they differ to modern notions of "intercity" in that they are not frequent and cover large distances, not really designed for commuting.

Older SMUs can be regularly found on the Gold Coast Line as well. At least one set would be on Airport-Gold Coast duties whilst the rest are mainly IMUs.

A few 260 class sightings from last night and this morning to report.
The 261/262 bro's were spotted ariving on Platform 9 at Roma Street at about 6:24PM yesterday on the Exhibition run. Spotted again terminating what I assume was an Exhibition run on Platform 4 at Brunswick Street at about 10:29PM.
SMU262 all by himself as a 3-car arrived on Platform 6 at Roma Street at about 8:20AM this morning displaying Bowen Hills on the desto. I assume this was 1M11 from Cleveland.

The G/C line is timetabled to run at 140km/h. Put in a EMU which can only go 100km/h and it starts to run very late......

What is the top speed of the new SMU's?
The trouble with trouble is that it starts with fun...

130km/h.
They have better acceleration than an 100/120 IMU to offset the lesser top speed.

Kinda right... it is on paper slower than the IMU100's still (though only just) at 8km station spacing:
IMU100
140km/h cruise speed, 0.68m/s/s acceleration, -1.1m/s/s deceleration
4 minutes 12 seconds
IMU160/SMU260
130km/h cruise speed, 0.8m/s/s acceleration, -1.12m/s/s deceleration
4 minutes 20 seconds
and for the record EMU
100km/h cruise speed, 0.775m/s/s acceleration, -1.1m/s/s deceleration
5 minutes 19 seconds
Though to be honest, even if the 160/260 had the acceleration characteristics of the IMU100's with the lower top speed, the trip would only have taken 5 seconds extra (4 minutes 25 seconds).
Note that these figures are taken from specifications found on the net and that in real life acceleration is rarely perfectly uniform.

In practice, I have been told that the best type of train to drive down the Gold Coast is the 120 IMU.
It doesn't make too much of a difference, but the IMU 160/SMU 260 have an acceleration rate of 0.83m/s/s. An SMU 200 has an acceleration rate of 0.8m/s/s.
