I'm still not sure that '&' is acceptable. Basically I want to break away from the days of a particular user's love of writing:

"Yes & they are very very very good James & when will they be coming out James & they are very very good Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes "

Don't rub it out just yet. Have a look at the AdMet site www.adelaidemtro.com.au, go to the 'New Timetables from August 21' bit and check out the number of amperdands,

Sorry for being a spelling nazi but, did you mean to type 'ampersand' as that is the correct spelling?

Yes, I did.

No, I don't.

On the subject of ampersands, I never use them on this forum unless I make reference to a publication where an ampersand is specifically used in the title, such as Rails Through Swamp & Sand. That is how it is written on the front cover, so that is how I make reference to it.

Can we leave recognized symbols as a "grey area" which will be accepted in reasonable quantities but not if they're over-used?

Ampersands are considered acceptable in titles, and certain other specific usages. They are not supposed to be used in general written English.

Having said that, I do use ampersands in any sms's that I do, but in general writing, no I don't use that at all.

I believe the grammatical rules that cover apersands, also now apply to the 'at' symbol. It is acceptable, for obvious reasons, to use @ in email address's, but it is grammatically incorrect to use @ in place of 'at' in general written works such as letters and essays.

Cool cars too. Some of those 1930s straight 8 beasts with two rear axles kicked no end of Arsch.

I just noticed this thread, what about this for subject headings?

"NEWSFLASH: Costa & Bachelor get sacked", or SYD: Trams to return to CBD? (The SYD part, not the CBD part)

OR what about the American spelling (well it is an American spellchecker ("underused")) eg: favorite, versus favourite, etc, etc,

Some caps for emphasis (or more correctly, for categorization) should be OK. But TITLES IN ALL CAPS is just like shouting - achieves nothing at all.

Obviously a fine line needs to be drawn, as mods & admin dont want to be seen as going overboard issuing warning fur using "&" instead of "and" ETC. As mods will know, upholding the site ethics and requirements & responsibilities will vary from user to user. But i feel pulling something up that has complete caps in a title, or a post that meerely has "yay" or is nothing but sms talk, then fair enough.... if a post contains a minimal ammount, then that should be fair enough.

But my question is, what is a considerable ammount??? 20%, 50%???

Cheers

Your friend in time

Mick

In the end it comes down to each individual moderators opinion. If one moderator thinks it needs changing to lowercase, they'll do it.
