What about people who don't begin sentences with a capital letter (unless a good reason to do so), or who don't use a capital "I", when used as a "word".

I think this is taking the issue a bit too far now.

Personally I'm just going to title all my threads as a load of bolded italicised underlined capital ampersands. Wink

We're not Language Nazis but we do have a shared responsibility to uphold a certain standard. Mods are tasked with overseeing that standard within guidelines and for my money they generally get it pretty much right. Of course there will be situations open to debate, but then the warning system is also open to appeal. And any glaring inconsistencies can also be managed through existing guidelines.

Just don't ******* swear any more! Embarassed

As stated earlier - it's fine in a heading, but not in a post. Using it in general writing is incorrect. There is just no need for it.

Has the "problem" with ampersands got anything to do with how they "cause" other problems with Railpage Australia™ itself, like from a technical POV? For instance, I've noticed that whenever an ampersand is in a thread title of a thread that I'm "watching", it comes out a bit weirdly on the Reply to Thread email. If the title was "NR103 & freight", on the email it will show as "NR103 &;amp freight. Or something like that.

Sometimes that happens, yes. Other than that, it looks untidy, and reminds us of a particular trouble user who was almost unbearable around a year ago.

I don't aim to get anyone offside here at all, but I think you have taken it a little bit far.

The term "&" is everywhere. I don't use it, but to say to people that cannot use a common symbol like that on a forum is a little absurd in my book.

I've said it before. It's a forum here. Open to the general public all over the world for FREE, I think you'll struggle to enforce a rule like that.

To me, it's a crazy rule. But you guys are in charge and I'll stick by the rules as i enjoy browsing Railpage Australia™!

However I do understand if it reminds you of a particular user, and how it annoys you, but does that mean if some user starts getting annoying and uses lots of "-"'s you will ban them too?

Just my opinion, like i said i don't mean too offend you James, or anyone!

I think people are getting the wrong end of the stick here. At no time has Railpage Australia™ ever enforced 'hard rules' that are enforced regardless of anything. At all times moderators are encouraged to use their judgement in all matters -- the same can be said here.

Note once again that I was providing advisory examples.

Well I'm glad I stumbled across this sticky.
3 I couldn't figure out either but here's what I concluded.

IIRC- either a branch of RIC or something to do with industrial relations
WSITD- "was it......?" I never worked out D
AFAIK- another way of saying "oh bother" without smeg substituting.

A glossary of abbreviations may be the go for newbies which even after 135 posts I feel like sometimes.

I'm not a prolific poster and even less a chronic SMSer, but I thought the idea of abbreviating (not excessively) made posting quicker and easier to read. Smaller posts for example rather than essays.

I have to agree with TLD™'s (sorry), The Loaded Dog'sVery Happy Dark Red post on the first page (13th down) and webslave's response. Terms like; judge, moderate, discression and common sense sum up to me what is expected re the use of abbreviations.

I do have a replacement for WTF though. How about WT and leave the rest to imagination. "What The" still packs a punch, is even more economical and shouldn't offend, you'd think.

IIRC = If I Recall Correctly
WSITD = Wild Stab In The Dark (Most commonly seen in the various quizzes)
AFAIK = As Far As I Know.

But hey, your interpretations are pretty good, too Razz

There is probably a wide grey area between what is considered the accepted convention across chat and boards re abbeviations and what is termed "text speak" or "chat speak".

I take no issue with the use of IIRC, AFAIK and similar, but would not wish to read through pages of abbreviated text wrtn lk ths.

Likewise I have no problem with abbreviation to initials of user names (JoM for John of Melbourne, for instance), particularly as it is usually only done with reference to that person's recent post which will appear just above.

Oscar, here's some more acronymic ones you may/have encountered:

ISTR = I Seem To Remember
AFAIC = As Far As I'm Concerned
OIC = Oh I See
