Blame scary movie for that. Some of them just say sup which is a pretty reliable way to contrive a conversation before it starts as unlike how r u it doesn't actually ask you anything in particular.

If someone said sup to me and I said good thanks I'd have to ask them to give me a fish slap

Farewell 'WTF'.     **sniff**

Seriously though, this campaign has my full support.

If this was farewelled back in 2005, then how come it is still widely used today?

Please correct me if such a move was later quashed.

...You are meanink zat I can no longer do my "Ve haf vays ov making you tok?" imprezzions?   Scheisse.  You are no fun.

... and on that highly cultured note,  what about naughty words in foreign languagues?

Mockdeutsch ist nicht höflich. This kind of text is also potentionally defamatory.

No it is not.  Your assertion is incorrect.  As someone raised on "Allo Allo" and "Hogans Heroes", I find your statement highly offensive.  Can you please explain to me how a statement written in "fake nazi" defames the German people in general?

Well, it has something to do with making fun of accents, this is not just from the mouth of one person, I was actually raised to consider this highly offensive. I am told, this not just being from the mouth of one person, that making fun of a particular accent can be quite offensive to those who talk with that accent. How would you feel if someone made and exaggerated imitation of your accent, if you have never experienced it before, you don't know what it's like. Mad

Well, Crocodile Dundee raked in the bucks at the Australian box office, and Steve Irwin's zoo seems to be doing well, so I don't think too many people are offended.

As for ze Cherman people beink offended, if it's generic, what's the problem?  If I'm repeating everything you say in a mock accent, that's different, but in terms of a message board, ve VILL take ze mick.

No worries, aaaay maaate?

I really wonder why this has now meandered into its third thread.

Just because you are offended is no good reason to go stomping over all and any thread to vent your offended feelings. You may have well been brought up and have sensibilities and personal values, but this *is* a public forum, and I wonder if it is really apt to vent your sensibilities across threads of your choice?

OK, mate?

Actually, I do.  For some bizarre reason kids at school thought I had an American accent, and mocked me for *years* with a fake "Texan" style voice.  I hated it, but I got over it.  (Even when they said "So how's it feel to lose the America's Cup?" back in '83. Razz )

As I've stated before, I did 5 years (not that there's much to show for it Sad ) of High School German.  It's not possible (or at least very difficult) to learn a foreign language without gaining an appreciation for the culture and people that speak that language.  It's also quite possible that I have German ancestry (from southern Denmark, quite possibly from the part of that country which used to be German territory.)

However, I will extend the olive branch here.  I very rarely use the "Ve haf vays" style of speech anymore - it's been "old" for many years, and my own comments were made two years ago - so as a concession on my behalf, I will make every effort to never use "mockdeutsch"  again.

My own opinion: being this precious about it is ridiculous.

One of the main pillars of Aussie humour is p1ss-taking. If you have a problem with a few funny one-liners or quotes on a web forum, you'll have a hard time out in the real world as long as you live here.

What is wrong with having a joke about an accent? Americans do it about Canadians, the Poms do it with every single variation of their accents (Scouse, Jordie, Cockney, etc etc...) - hell, award-winning TV shows base half their show around the p1ss-taking of accents. Just look at The Fast Show ("I'm a geezer, I'll nick anything, and I've nicked his wallet...")

Nobody is forcing you to read posts containing (as Johnmc put it) "mockdeutsch", and posting in that style is certainly not against the rules here.

Why is it so hard for some people to follow this simple rule?

DO NOT POST THREADS WITH THE TITLE WRITTEN IN CAPITALS! IT IS CONSIDERED SHOUTING! ARRRRRR!!

Any threads with the subject in capitals will be deleted on sight. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED - AGAIN!

i understand your frustration seeing thread titles in capitals. what i find even more annoying is those who only ever type in lower case.

i don't think it's just being 'cutesy' either.
