Heck, we may as well do this right!

Additionally, effective immediately - posts containing unneccesary SMS/Chat/TXT speak will be deleted on sight without notice. Users who continue to offend will be issued with healthy warnings.

For those who are unaware of what I am talking about, see below:

Wrong:
Quote:
Trainz r kewl u kno wot i mean?

Right:
Quote:
Trains are cool, do you know what I mean?

This measure is being enforced as posts such as the "Wrong" example serve to make the forums look untidy, and are unpleasant to read.

[quote="Webslave"]Wrong:
Quote:
Trainz r kewl u kno wot i mean?
I could never understand why anyone would type the same number of letters to infer the same word anyway. Trainz = Trains is still 5 letters and kewl=cool is still 4 letters Confused Good move except if someone is actually discussing Trainz Clap Clap

I think we'll add 'WTF' to the "no" list.

I'm changing my full support to mostly supporting this.

I've got a small concern about one area, and that is the concept of "banned words". I think a list of words or acronyms which are verboten is arbitrary and unwieldy. Message board rules should operate at a much broader level than this. A complex list of three different levels "not permitted, "tolerated is small doses", and "to be used freely" is going to going to catch out innocent newbies, or regulars who use certain terms absentmindedly. I think, if an otherwise unblemished post has, for example, one usage of the word "wot", then that post should not be removed, and its author should not be hassled. On the other hand, the SMS-style posts should of course be pulled. Moderators should act more like judges and less like legislators, IMHO. The rules should be more analogous to common law than the statute variety. Discretion and willingness to interpret the rules is the hallmark of good moderation. Blind adherence to black and white rules is not good moderation.

Some black and white rules will always be necessary. There should not be a huge number of them, and they should be broad. My favourite one of these is from another board I visit: We have one guiding principle: Don't be a jerk. Brilliant. That board does have other, more specific rules, but you could near get away with just having that one. I've adopted it for my own board (except I changed the American "jerk" to the much more local "goose"), and I'd recommend it for this board.

Rather than endless argument over which slang should and shouldn't be permitted, why not just have "thou shalt type in accepted colloquial Australian English" and leave it at that?

Just my 2c.

As with all rules, our moderators are encouraged to use common sense and descretion wherever they feel it is neccesary. I think that in itself just about covers what you've said there TLD™.

The list of banned words is advisory only. We take a hardline in announcing rules - simply as a deterrent.

What about banning constant German accented text?

Seriously, that's as hard to read (Although easier to hear) as SMS/TXT crap is.
