What future Is there for the Portland North railway yard as the area Is very run down and abandoned looking.

If the yard was closed and redeveloped for housing, Partland and light Industrial would the yard be missed ?
The yard was last used to store unused grain hoppers and I think the last freight loading In and out of the yard was logs In 2002 ?

Does any one know much about this yard that by the looks of It was a very large busy yard with siding going off Into fuel terminals surrounding the yard (fuel was transported vic ship from Shell at Corio to the S. L. Paterson tanker berth on the Northern breakwater of Portland Harbour and piped up the cliff to the terminals)
Was the yard home to the original Portland Loco ?

Austraila needs to stop stuffing around with different rail gauges and all go Stephenson Standard 4'8.5"(1435mm)

The yard looks in better comdition than I thought, most of the builtings (apart from the the fuel lines) look to be in good condition.

There was also one other siding to the BP depot the line left the yard from the South end and along the platform side to the depot.

I remember when the yard was in use just after standardisation, the Portland Rail Freight Group or something like that used the yard and shunts run between there and the harbor yard twice a day. A lot more of the yard was still intacked back then, not so much now.

As I recall the yard reached its peak in about the 1970's it has a 70' turntable a locoshed the for fuel sidings a number of loop siding and four dead end sidings they were undercover (don't know when this was demolished but it may have been about 1999 or 2000.

Since the building of the siding at Kalari's depot there has been very little use for any type of loading here, I don't see any real reason for the yard to remain but I also don't know of any plans for houseing by the council. Unless El Zorro or someone use it for storage of rollingstock it will just sit unused.
